`Runners Complete Comeback in 5-Set Win at EWU

CHENEY, Wash. – The Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team leaned on Suelen Lima's career-high 28 kills to beat Eastern Washington 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-5 on Friday at Reese Court. The Roadrunners rallied from a 2-1 deficit then used an 11-0 run in the fifth set to run away with the road victory.

Key Facts
  • Lima hit .333 with 12 digs for a double-double. Her 28 kills were the most by a Big West student-athlete this season and fifth-most in a CSUB match during its NCAA Division I era (since 2007).
  • Analiese Gagliano tallied a career-high and match-best 22 digs. Samantha Capinpin added 22 assists, 13 digs, and three aces, while Luiza Da Cruz led CSUB with 24 assists.
  • Leylah Duran put down eight kills on .412 hitting and led the `Runners with four blocks. Defne Yanik added eight kills on .375 hitting.
  • CSUB led the match 64-51 in kills, 11-9 in aces, and 77-66 in digs. Eastern Washington's Kalista Lukovich had 26 kills, four aces and 11 digs.
How it Happened

CSUB never trailed in the first set. EWU used six straight points to pull within 14-13, but the `Runners answered with a 5-0 burst for a 22-16 lead and won 25-20.

The Eagles broke a 2-all tie with three straight in the second and led the rest of the way. The third set had five ties and three lead changes. CSUB pulled even at 12, but Eastern Washington used a late 3-0 run to reach set point and eventually took a 2-1 advantage on the match.

The fourth set featured 11 ties. Down 19-18, the `Runners scored three straight, then added another 3-0 run after the Eagles cut the margin to 21-20 to force a fifth set.

At 2-all in the fifth, CSUB ripped off 11 consecutive points to pull so far ahead that a home-team comeback felt nearly impossible. The `Runners hit .471 with eight kills and no errors in the tiebreaker set while holding EWU to -.056. Lima sealed the match with her 28th kill of the night.
