CSUB Earns First Win vs. Cal Poly in DI Era

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Riding the momentum of two early goals, the Cal State Bakersfield (2-2-2) men's soccer team earned a 3-2 victory over longtime rival Cal Poly (3-2-3) Wednesday night. The Roadrunners tallied their first win against the Mustangs since moving to NCAA Division I in 2007.

Key Facts
  • The `Runners notched goals off the feet of Oshea Foster (16:44), Charlie Cazares (21:11), and Justin Knighton (63:10) while both of Cal Poly's goals came via penalty kicks.
  • Making just his second start of the season in goal, CSUB's Diego Ramirez needed to register just one save on the night as the `Runner defense kept Ramirez safe with grit and hustle.
  • Cal Poly suffered just its second loss of the season with the first coming on the road against No. 6-ranked Indiana.
  • Five `Runner field players legged out all 90 minutes in the fray: Ulisse Alberti, Jackson Chambers, Filip Arras, Curtis Miley, and Josh Robinson.
  • Wednesday night's matchup was a physical battle that saw seven yellow cards handed out (four for Cal Poly, three for Bakersfield).
 How it Happened

The `Runners struck twice in the first 22 minutes, catching their hosts off guard with early haymakers. Foster netted his third goal of the season, beating the Cal Poly keeper thanks to pinpoint passes from Jesse Wangusi and Joey Velasquez. Less than five minutes later, Cazares sent a 30-yard blast to the back of the net on a free kick golazo.

Cal Poly answered in the 35th minute on a PK opportunity for Colin Pearce, who barely beat the outstretched hands of a diving Ramirez, making the score 2-1 before halftime.

Bakersfield continued pressuring the Mustangs in the second period and found itself leading 3-1 in the 64th minute. Josh Robinson went over to the top to a streaking Knighton, who put a one-time volley into the back of the net with a strong strike.

Cal Poly came within one goal again in the 82nd thanks to Pearce's second PK goal of the night. The Mustang was stopped initially by the feet of Ramirez, but Pearce dinked in his own rebound to make it 3-2.

Bakersfield fended off Cal Poly's advances over the final eight minutes and sealed the historic, 3-2 victory inside Spanos Stadium.
