CSUB Athletics Visits Kennedy HS to Share Insight with Student-Athletes

DELANO, Calif. – Members of the Cal State Bakersfield Athletics Department visited Robert F. Kennedy High School on Wednesday to speak with nearly 300 student-athletes about the collegiate student-athlete experience and to provide information and resources to help them prepare for the possibility of competing at the next level.

The Roadrunner representatives discussed the academic, athletic, and personal responsibilities associated with competing in college, as well as crucial steps to take to be prepared to become collegiate student-athletes. The delegation included Arthur Smith, Marketing and Fan Engagement specialist and Head Cheer Coach; Doc Waller, `Runner Ready Program Coordinator; Bridget Alexander, Director of Compliance; and Skye Odom, a CSUB track and field student-athlete and the Associated Students, Inc. Vice President of University Affairs.

The visit aligned with CSUB Athletics' commitment to being actively engaged in the local community and CSU Bakersfield's mission to serve as "Kern County's University."

Waller spoke about the `Runner Ready program, which provides Roadrunner student-athletes with life skills and resources to help them succeed during college and prepare for life beyond athletics.

"I thought it was a great opportunity for us to share the collegiate experience with a smaller community and expose them to what collegiate athletics is all about," Waller said.

Odom, who is balancing her career as a student-athlete with her role as a campus leader, offered the high school students a firsthand perspective on the college experience.

"It was fun talking to these kids today and letting them know that while it may be a lot to be a student-athlete, it's always so rewarding," Odom said. "You make friends, travel, and get out there for new experiences."

Alexander provided information about compliance and the rules that govern collegiate athletics, while Smith discussed the fan experience and opportunities available through CSUB Athletics.

"Today was a good day for CSUB Athletics and Kennedy High School," Smith said. "To have a full room of student-athletes eager to learn about what it takes to reach the next level was energizing. I think Kennedy is on the right track by exposing its students to information like this early so they are best prepared for their future."

The visit reflects CSUB Athletics' continued efforts to connect with local schools, support student-athletes throughout Kern County, and help young people understand the opportunities and expectations that come with competing at the collegiate level. Any other Kern County schools interested in having a CSUB Athletics delegation come speak to their student-athletes can reach out to Arthur Smith (asmith68@csub.edu) to arrange a visit.
