Cross Country opens season with Seawolf Invitational

The Cal State Bakersfield men’s soccer team put together a pair of strong performances on Opening Weekend and will roll that momentum into a clash at home this weekend.
On Sunday, Sept. 3, the `Runners will host the Pacific Tigers.

Hometown Heroes Night
Up to two free tickets available (upon RSVP) for military, police, fire, and medical personnel
UOP holds a slight, 3-2 advantage in the all-time series against Cal State Bakersfield. The two teams first met in 2015 and have met almost every year since. The Tigers have won the last three clashes, including 4-2 victories in 2021 and 2022.
Last year, the `Runners and Tigers met in Stockton, Calif. and Pacific used three second-half goals to pull away from CSUB. The match was also very physical as eight yellow cards were handed out, four on each side.
Bakersfield’s defense has been solid this season, allowing just one goal per match to two tough squads. Defenders Bryson Hankins, Haruya Iwasaki, and Sinan Solmaz have all played all 90 minutes in both matches so far while fellow defender Stephon Marcano has only missed two minutes.

After going 1-1 on the weekend and Bernardo Silva earning his first career win as Head Coach of the Cal State Bakersfield Women's Soccer team, the `Runners are prepared to follow up with more solid performances.
Bakersfield continues on the road for a single game this week before finally returning for a two-game home stead. The `Runners travel to Loyola Marymount on Thursday.
Los Angeles., 7 p.m. (PT) kickoff
It has been nearly seven years since the two teams have faced off, but Loyola Marymount holds a 6-0 all-time record over a `Runners squad that will be looking to snap that streak.
Bakersfield last traveled to Los Angeles in 2016 during a 4-1 loss to the Lions. However, the `Runners will be looking to capitalize on the fact that Loyola Marymount has lost both games against Big West opponents this year in UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.
At 1-3 this season, Loyola Marymount is a tough team in a vulnerable spot for a hungry `Runners team to try for their second win against. In particular, Bakersfield will look to shore up its defense against a team that has score just one goal this season.

At New Mexico on Thursday, Aug. 31, 5:30 p.m.
Lobos is hosting a three-day Volleyball tournament, play CSUB on day one.
The Lobos are coming off a 2-1 record from opening weekend.
Utah Tech on Friday, Sept. 1, 3:00 p.m.
Day two of the Lobos tournament, CSUB will see Utah Tech.
In their first weekend back, Utah Tech went 1-2 in the Weber State Tournament.
St. Johns on Saturday, Sept. 2, 10:00 am.

The Thunderbirds are currently on a winning streak, 2-1, after their weekend at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational
The `Runners are coming off an undefeated winning streak after defending the Icardo this weekend at the Roadrunner Classic.

Cal State Bakersfield Cross Country is set to open 2023 this Saturday at the Seawolf Invitational hosted by Sonoma State.
Fresno, Calif., 8:30 a.m. (PT) race time
Senior Helena Valentic is the top returner for the `Runners as she ranks third all-time in program history for the 6k. At last year’s Seawolf Invitational, the native of Croatia finished the 5k course third overall with a personal best of 18:59.7. Valentic consistently ran first for Bakersfield at every race last year.
Bakersfield native Neyda Martinez returns for her junior season. Martinez was consistently #2 on the team last year.
Newcomer Jayden Reyes Sarmiento transferred to CSUB from Bakersfield College. She looks to bring experience for the `Runners.
Other returners looking to make an immediate impact for Bakersfield are Valerie Garcia, Alicia Muralles, Alea Goana, and freshman Anicia Carrillo.
Bakersfield will be lining up its largest roster in recent years with 14 women set to race on Saturday.
