Men's Soccer dominates, Women's Soccer puts up good fight in exhibition matches

Volleyball enjoyed a great turnout at the Blue-Gold Scrimmage

Women's Soccer dropped a narrow exhibition match, 1-0

In the team's first exhibition match of the season, Cal State Bakersfield cruised past Life Pacific for a 6-0 victory.
Bakersfield netted six goals from five different goal scorers, with a little help from the Warriors' second-half own goal.
Sophomore Nathan Jimenez got the scoring started early with a goal in the eighth minute. Bryson Hankins closed the first-half scoring in the 43rd minute before Bakersfield piled on four more goals in the final 45 minutes.
Redshirt freshman Shia Clayton tallied a team-high three points on the evening, tallying a late goal and assisting on the final score of the match.
CSUB dominated possession in the exhibition victory while only allowing Life Pacific to take four shots on the night, all of which came in the final ten minutes.
All three of Bakersfield's goalkeepers saw time in the net with freshman Andre Moraes tallying back-to-back saves late in the match.
Interim Head Coach Adam Grant's thoughts: "We wanted to work on the fitness levels and embedding our new players and our returners together. That went well and everybody played quite a big part of the game."
The `Runners will host California Baptist on Tuesday night, a team that went to the NCAA Tournament last season.

The Saint Mary's Gaels nabbed a 1-0 victory from Bakersfield with an early second half goal. Despite a valiant effort from the `Runners, a comeback was not on the horizon and CSUB fell to a strong opponent on the road.
Catalina Roggerone and Dome Rodriguez, two of CSUB’s internationally capped players this summer, had the team’s two lone shots on target. Roggerone put in a complete 90 minutes of work in the midfield.
Despite the score, Bakersfield's Head Coach Bernardo Silva rightfully feels the most just result would have been a draw, given that the two opponents were separated in possession by just 2% and one shot on target.
Coach Silva on the match: “I am a happier coach today than I was on Monday after our solid win against The Master’s University. At this time of the season, the team performances being closer to the identity that we want is most important despite losing 1-0 to a good Saint Mary’s team. I thought we made great strides in getting to the type of soccer we desire to play this season. We were very good in our defensive actions and are continuing to grasp the way we will attack to get the most out of the personnel we have. I am excited about the future and we are looking forward to our trip to Sacramento State.”
The `Runner women open their regular season on the road this weekend at Sacramento State, the former home of Coach Silva.

Hundreds of `Runner fans showed up on Saturday to get their first look at the 2023 Volleyball squad.
Despite tightly-contested sets, the Gold team was able to squeak out a 3-0 victory for the third-straight year.
The Blue squad got some revenge, taking a shortened fourth set.
Head Coach Giovana Melo will now have a little less than two weeks to prepare her `Runners for the start of the regular season.
Bakersfield will host the Roadrunner Classic, Aug. 25-26, featuring six matches over two days.

Sophomore swimmer Vili Sivec represented both CSUB and his home country of Croatia at the 2023 European U23 Championships in Dublin, Ireland this past weekend.
Sivec, who recently enjoyed an outstanding first year with the `Runners, continued to prove himself as an international threat in the pool.
Swimming against the fastest under-23 athletes in the world, Sivec posted 12th-place finishes in both the 100 Butterfly and 200 Butterfly in Dublin.
Sivec and CSUB Head Coach Chris Hansen have visions of rings on the horizon as the two prepare for a potential bid to the 2024 Olympics hosted in Paris next summer.
