CSUB Gets Offense Flowing but Falls to USC Grand Slams

LOS ANGELES – With its final single-game non-conference series of the year, the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team came up against a very solid USC squad that has faced and beaten ranked opponents in 2023. The Roadrunners fought incredibly hard to keep up with the Trojans, including James Bell's four-RBI evening, but USC got the better of the at-bats with two grand slams to secure a 12-8 victory in a back-and-forth slugfest.

Notables
  • James Bell enjoyed a wonderful performance against a USC team that has beaten ranked foes this season. With two hits and four RBI tonight, Bell extended his hitting streak and has 10 RBI in the last five games.
  • Kobe Silva and Brock Perreira both contributed greatly to the CSUB offensive effort, as they each had two RBIs apiece, including Perreira's first career Division I home run.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "We did a nice job offensively tonight, especially with taking quality at-bats throughout the game. Belly [James Bell] and Brock [Perreira] came up with big hits that gave us a chance to win… Our players did a nice job of competing all night, and that's a tribute to their competitiveness."
  • "The difference in the game was our inability to take care of the baseball when outs were offered. We needed to throw more strikes after their defensive mishaps. We gave them too many opportunities, and a good team like that will always take advantage."
CSUB 8, USC 12
  • The `Runners got started early with plenty of hits in the opening half-inning. AJ Miller doubled into right field, putting himself and Matthew Kurata in scoring position before Kobe Silva hit into a fielder's choice for the game's first run.
  • James Bell followed up the opening run with a two-run shot past the left field wall, extending CSUB's early lead to 3-0 after Bell's homer.
  • The Trojans were able to pick up an RBI-single to get their first run of the game before another one was walked in. USC took the lead in the second inning after a grand slam, pulling ahead of CSUB 6-3.
  • CSUB responded right away with another RBI-single from Kobe Silva. James Bell followed him up with two more RBIs as the `Runners tied the Trojans through two-and-a-half innings.
  • The game was finally quiet for an inning before USC hit its second grand slam of the game to go up 10-6 in the fourth. Both Bryce Grudzielanek and Carson Wells for USC led the way.
  • Brock Perreira got involved with a two-run moonshot to cut the deficit in half, as the `Runners trailed just 10-8 in the fifth.
  • USC added two more runs to regain the four-run lead, which the Trojans held until the end of the game.
