BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team entered this series with UC Riverside with a 16-27 record. After a midweek game with USC, the `Runners were looking to get things going against a fellow Big West opponent. The Bakersfield bats provided support for Ryan Verdugo throughout the game allowing him to go seven innings and leave in line for the win.

UCR 3, CSUB 6
  • Ryan Verdugo completed his first inning of work on just four pitches after a 6-3 double play for the Roadrunners.
  • In the bottom of the frame, James Bell drove in Matthew Kurata to put Bakersfield in front 1-0 early.
  • Jared Bujanda drove added to the Bakersfield lead in the second and fourth innings with a double and SAC fly.
  • Kurata brought in Bujanda to put the Roadrunners up 6-1.
  • UCR hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to shorten the lead 6-3.
  • Three Roadrunners had multi-hit games (Bujanda, Kurata, Bell, Hendriks).
    • Every CSUB batter in the starting lineup reached base tonight.
      • Kurata had his 17th multi-hit of the season and extended his hitting streak to 11 games, tying his season long; he also extended his team leading 26th game reaching base.
      • Bell had his 15th multi-hit game of the season.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • Verdugo pitch well to set the tone followed by a quality night of defense. He was able to attack the zone for the most part and allow our defense to go to work.
  • We had steady offensive production tonight, scoring in multiple innings, with multiple batters getting hits.
  • Riverside battled all game long; we need to come out and play solid all-around game tomorrow.
