`Runners Fall to Early Long Beach Lead in Game One

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team found plenty of hits against Long Beach State, but the Roadrunners could not quite find the runs necessary to keep up with the Dirtbags. With the `Runners falling 8-2 in game one on the road, AJ Miller and James Bell contributed CSUB's lone RBIs and the bullpen relievers of Ryan Figueroa and Gabe Ulloa helped limit the damage during the loss.

Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "Long Beach State was able to use the long ball to its advantage tonight. They did not hit Verdugo hard consistently, but they were able to get some balls out of the yard. That make a big difference."
  • "We let a few balls drop early, and that upped Verdugo's pitch count a bit so he was not able to maintain momentum. Verdugo pitched well for the most part."
CSUB 2, LBSU 8
  • Jacob Ruley put the first hit on the board for the `Runners and the game as a whole, but Long Beach was able to score first, with three separate runs through the first three innings with the help of some extra-base hits and a home run.
  • Jacob Ruley and AJ Miller stood in as runners on the corners, both via singles, before James Bell batted Ruley in for CSUB's first runs of the game.
  • The Dirtbags continued to notch extra-base hits and homered twice more before the `Runners were able to respond again with an AJ Miller sac RBI to bat in Matthew Kurata.
  • Ryan Figueroa and Gabe Ulloa were able to stop the bleeding and keep the `Runners going steadily through the remainder of the game, giving the offense a chance before LBSU eventually sealed the victory.
