Persistent `Runners Steal Win in Extra Innings

LONG BEACH, Calif. – With one of the most thrilling contests of the season thus far, the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team put together all three phases of its game together for a much-deserved 7-5 extra innings victory over Long Beach State, snapping the eight-game skid. Matt Comnos pitched a solid five-inning outing to hold the Dirtbags to just two hits and one unearned run. The Dirtbags fought back to send the game to extra innings, but James Bell came up clutch for the go-ahead run that eventually sealed the game with Ryan Figueroa closing out the game.

Notables
  • Matt Comnos opened the game hot and firing on all cylinders with four strikeouts in his first six outs of the ballgame. Comnos' command of his changeup was the clear difference in ensuring that CSUB could take the first lead of the game. He finished the game allowing just two hits and one unearned run.
  • Jacob Ruley legged out a triple for the game's first hit during the opening half-inning. However, the game's first run came in the third when both Ruley and Matthew Kurata hit sacrifice grounders to bring two runs across the plate.
  • Cody Hendriks channeled his success against UC Irvine into this game, extending the CSUB lead in a pivotal time after adding two RBIs on a #-for-# day.
  • Although the bullpen pitching had its troubles, Jeter Scheurman and Ryan Figueroa combined to help CSUB close the game out in extra innings after James Bell and Nick Salas had the RBIs that sealed the victory.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "I don't know a team more deserving to win a game like that than these young men. I could not be prouder of their effort and ability to stay persistent."
  • "Matt Comnos came out and pitched a great game early, and we gave up some runs late. Ryan Figueroa showed poise and was relentless in back-to-back days of pitching."
  • "Tomorrow is a new day and we will need to show up with the same level of intensity against a quality baseball team."
CSUB 7, LBSU 5
  • Jacob Ruley rallied with two outs in the opening half-inning and legged out a triple for the game's first hit before LBSU was able to shut down CSUB's offense.
  • In the third, Matthew Kurata nearly split the gap between the first and second basemen, but still got the RBI on a sac grounder as Cody Hendriks crossed home plate.
  • Jacob Ruley tacked on another run, bringing Kasper home with a sac grounder to first base. After two-and-a-half, the `Runners led 2-0.
  • Long Beach State capitalized on an error and passed ball in the fourth inning, getting on the scoreboard. Comnos prevented any further damage to retain the CSUB lead.

  • Long Beach State hit well off the bullpen pitching from CSUB to tie up the ballgame at 5-5 with a four-run eighth inning.
