CSUB Falls Just Short of Comeback Despite Ruley Rally

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Another tight contest came down to the very last at-bats of a game in which the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team fought back from a 5-0 fifth inning deficit to nearly tie. CSUN got the bats working early, with two runs in fourth and three more in the next inning, all of which included two home runs. At that point, the Roadrunners still had just one hit but finally found their stride in the latter half of the game, as Jacob Gutierrez and Matthew Kurata broke through with RBIs in the eighth. Jacob Ruley made it a nailbiter with his two-run moonshot in the ninth, but it was not enough as CSUN's Joshua Romero picked up his 13th save of the year, defeating the `Runners 5-4.

Notables
  • Matt Comnos fought every step of the way despite being awarded the loss, and tossed 115 pitches through five innings of work. After tonight, Comnos will most likely finish the season with 80 strikeouts, placing him eighth in CSUB history for single-season strikeouts.
  • Jacob Ruley's ninth inning homer gave him four on the year, tying AJ Miller for the team-lead despite having just 20 starts and 88 at-bats under his belt.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "That was a well-fought ballgame by both teams, and I felt like their starting pitcher was able to stay in rhythm a bit longer than we hoped. He did a nice job of limiting his pitch count and keeping himself in the ballgame."
  • "It was nice to young Guty [Jacob Gutierrez] hit that double down the line, giving a nice shot-in-the-arm for our ball club, and we responded well. We came up just short tonight against a good team. They just hit a pair home runs that changed the game with two swings of the bat."
  • On Comnos' final start: "We are very proud of Matt Comnos, especially in his growth both on and off the field. He has given himself a much better chance to compete at the level he wants to just by working hard and finding a way to develop into a strong left-hander in a league that is very tough to pitch in."
CSUB 4, CSUN 5
  • Matt Comnos was able to get himself out of a first inning jam, walking the bases loaded before tossing an absolute heater across the plate for an inning-ending strikeout.
  • CSUN found a pair of two-run homers from Jakob Simons and Joey Kramer, along with another RBI from Nathan Barraza, to surge ahead 5-0 through five innings.
  • All was quiet until Jacob Gutierrez sparked the Bakersfield dugout to life with an RBI double that featured Cody Hendriks making a highlight-reel swim move dive past the catcher to reach home plate.
  • Matthew Kurata followed Gutierrez up with his own RBI single in the eighth inning before Jacob Ruley made the Matadors very nervous with a left field no-doubter, bringing the `Runners within just one score of the tie.
  • CSUN's star closer Joshua Romero picked up yet another save after shutting down the final two Bakersfield batters, as CSUB fell just short of the comeback.
