`Runners Fight Hard But Fall to Late CSUN Push

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team came up against one of the Big West's toughest and most consistent teams in CSUN and put up a valiant fight during a back-and-forth game one. Despite allowing an early lead to the Matadors, the Roadrunners inched back to eventually tie the game at three-apiece before CSUN got back ahead on three runs in the final two innings to secure the 6-3 victory.

Notables
  • With a relief outing on the mound tonight, Gabe Ulloa has 23 games played this year and moved into fifth place for CSUB's single-season pitching appearances list.
  • The dynamic duo of James Bell and AJ Miller gave the biggest highlights of the night for CSUB, as Bell posted his tenth multi-RBI game with a 2-for-4, 2 RBI night, while Miller nearly hit one out of the park that still dropped in for an RBI double in his 1-for-3 game.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "I thought both teams came out and played really well, getting quality outing from their starters. Late in the game, they got a few breaks that we didn't get, and that was the difference in the ball game. You simply have to tip your cap to their pitcher on his performance tonight."
  • "We just have to take care of the baseball better. Things like errors are magnified in close games such as this. It's hard to swallow sometimes in a close game, but you have to give our guys credit for competing all night and having the chance to win against a very good team."
CSUB 3, CSUN 6
  • CSUN shortstop Ali Camarillo opened the scoring with a deep solo home run shot over the left field wall, putting the Matadors up 1-0.
  • The `Runners got their first hit and run via James Bell's RBI single up the middle to bring Konnor Palmeira across the plate. CSUB and CSUN stood tied after four innings.
  • The Matadors fired back in the next half inning with two more runs off routine singles and efficient baserunning to stretch advancing runners.
  • James Bell picked up his second RBI of the game to kick off the sixth inning before AJ Miller nearly smashed one out of the park, landing in the right-center gap and bringing home the tying run. CSUB and CSUN were knotted at 3-3 heading into the seventh inning.
  • CSUN broke the tie with its tenth hit in the game before adding two more unearned runs in the ninth due to a collection of throwing and fielding errors. CSUB could not recover after going down by three runs.
