Six `Runners Earn Academic All-District Honors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2023 Academic All-District® teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. Cal State Bakersfield excitedly announces six Roadrunner scholar-athletes who earned the distinction on Tuesday as part of the At-Large program.

The CSC At-Large program seeks to honor student-athletes from a wide range of sports. Institutions are able to nominate a maximum of five men and five women total from the list of sports. Of the sports on the At-Large list, Cal State Bakersfield sponsors wrestling, beach volleyball, and women's golf.

Men

Sophomore wrestler Mateo Morales is Bakersfield's lone Academic All-District honoree on the men's side. Morales stepped into a starting role at 197 pounds this season and he posted solid results this year, including a pair of wins during Pac-12 duals. As a Child, Adolescent, and Family Studies major, Morales has maintained a 3.90 cumulative GPA through three academic years.

Women

A native of Serbia, Jefi Dordevic is a business administration major with a concentration in finance who boasts a 3.96 GPA. On the golf course, Dordevic lowered her single-season scoring average by almost three strokes this past year and was an important part of CSUB's record-breaking year.
 
The first of four honorees from the Roadrunner beach volleyball team, Sophia Brandstetter just earned a master's in business administration from CSUB. After transferring to Bakersfield from Florida International University, Brandstetter was part of the team's No. 1 pairing this season along with fellow honoree Hana Makonova. The duo posted a 10-9 record as the No. 1 pair, regularly facing off against some of the top pairs in the country.

Makonova, who hails from Sokolov, Czech Republic, just crossed the stage with a degree in engineering sciences. While maintaining a 3.93 GPA, Makonova also became CSUB's all-time leader in career victories in the sand with 44.

After redshirting the 2022 season to develop her game, Emma Bubelis made an immediate impact in her first competitive season in the sand. A criminal justice major, Bubelis has a 3.63 GPA and she also paired with Alanna Shields to post the best record on the team this season at 17-7, a single-season record for CSUB.

Sophia Hladyniuk posted a 16-8 record as part of CSUB's No. 2 beach pairing this season. A former All-Conference honoree, Hladyniuk also excels in the classroom with a 3.77 GPA as a criminal justice major.

Academic All-District and All-America

Nominated student-athletes must meet the minimum athletic requirements of being a starter or important reserve. Academically, candidates must maintain at least a 3.50 GPA and they must have been at their current institution for at least a year (an exception is made for graduate transfers).

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.
