CSUB Battles But Falls Twice in Unexpected Double Header

WACO, Texas – In a rollercoaster of a weekend-ender, the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team had game two suspended just before the fifth inning due to severe lightning in the Waco area. In that game, the Roadrunners got behind early and were not able to recover after the resumption on Saturday after Baylor continued adding runs through day three for an 11-2 win. In the final game, Baylor wrapped up the series sweep with a victory on a first-inning glut that had all five of their runs. Despite CSUB's bats finding consistency and outhitting Baylor 13-7, the `Runners were unable to rescue the comeback, falling 5-2.

Notables
  • With a free pass in the third inning of game two, Nick Salas tied the CSUB single-season walks record at 36, which put him on base for Matthew Kurata to tie the game up early.
  • Severe lightning in game two caused the umpires to suspend play for the evening, as CSUB and Baylor instead resumed the game as part of a Saturday doubleheader.
  • Baylor used two games of early leads to take the series win on an unusual pair of Saturday contests.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "Our played competed well today. With a cleaner first inning, we walk out of here with a win in the second game. We gave up too many free bases throughout the series, and that was the difference."
  • "We knew there was poor weather hovering Friday night with lightning and rain in the area. So, we used [Davonte] Butler as an opener to ensure Matt Comnos got a well-earned clean start. Other than a hiccup in the first inning, we pitched well and play solid defense throughout."
  • "We left 13 runners stranded compared to their 6 through today's games. Timely hitting is key in this game, and we could not find any holes when it mattered the most."
  • "We'll need a solid week of work to prepare for a quality CSUN team this upcoming week."
CSUB 2, Baylor 11
  • Baylor opened the scoring in the second inning with Gavin Brzozowski's moon shot to right field, putting the Bears up 1-0 as the `Runners remained hitless through three innings. Matthew Kurata finally broke through with a game-tying RBI in the right-center gap.
  • Brzozowski hit a sac fly in the bottom of the third for the Bears' second run of the game, putting Baylor ahead.
  • Colby Branch hit a three-run homer that opened the game up and put Baylor ahead 5-1, as the `Runners turned to Tally Wright Jr. in relief before the game was put on hold due to lightning in the area.
  • CSUB had back-to-back errors from behind home plate and at short stop, which led to a pair of runs coming in for Baylor as the Bears extended their lead to 7-1 in the sixth.
  • After Matthew Lee managed an RBI in a pinch-hit appearance, the Bears tacked on another four runs through the final two innings to secure victory.
CSUB 2, Baylor 5
  • Konnor Palmeira got CSUB started with an early lead after back-to-back singles from Matthew Kurata and Matt Masciangelo to start the game.
  • Baylor came back the next half inning and put together a five-run effort, which included a three-run triple that put the Bears up 5-1.
  • Despite the CSUB offense definitively outhitting Baylor 13-7, the `Runners were only able to tack on one more run with Riley Kasper's RBI single in the sixth inning.
