`Runners Claim 4 Podium Spots at Big West Championships

Fullerton – The Cal State Bakersfield track and field team claimed four podium spots at the Big West Track and Field Championships. Miranda Miller and Kynnedi McCall became individual champions in their events. Thomas Richardson and Riley Slayton were runner ups.

The impressive season for the Roadrunner was capped off with a historic championship meet. It is the most impressive conference performance by both teams in the division one era. The men's team took eighth with 19 points, beating out UC Davis. On the women's side, they were slightly edged by CSU Northridge, to finish tenth with a score of 31 points.

Top Performances
  • On day one of the championship meet, Thomas Richardson took fifth place overall in the men's hammer throw. His mark of 193'08" was a personal best and he moved up on the CSUB all-time list. The following day, with momentum on his side, Richardson placed second overall in the shot put. His new best throw of 56'04.5" is good for #12 all-time in program history. He earned the most points for the `Runners over the weekend with twelve total points.
  • In just her third 400-meters of the season, Kynnedi McCall became the Big West Champion in the event and broke a 40-year-old school record. McCall's time of 54:15 dominated the field.
  • Miranda Miller became back-to-back Big West Champion in the pole vault. She was only female athlete of the meet to break 13 feet in the event. This was the ninth time Miller won the event this season. She looks to improve at the NCAA West Regional Meet in a few weeks, after qualifying with her season best of 13'08.5". Miller is ranked fourth in the region.
  • Riley Slayton became runner-up in the women's 400-meter hurdles for the second year. Slayton had an impressive season. Slayton is ranked 11th in the region; she will have another shot to improve.
  • Matthew Garrett placed sixth overall in the men's shot put. His mark of 54'06.50" was big points for Bakersfield in team scores.
  • Julia Stein contributed points as well, placing seventh in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.74.
  • In a big personal best throw of 188'03", Axel Salazar finished in eighth overall in the men's hammer throw.
