Hawai'i Rallies in Finale, `Runners Win Series

HONOLULU – Saturday's Big West baseball series finale between Cal State Bakersfield and Hawai'i ended up in yet another 3-2 final score, but this time, the Rainbow Warriors edged out a narrow win over their guests. Despite the close loss, the Roadrunners will return to the mainland with their first Big West series victory of the year after claiming the first two games of the weekend on the road.

Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "This was a big series to regain confidence in key areas. It's a tall order to come over here and win a series; we had a good chance to sweep the series today. We can all be proud of the way our ballclub competed this weekend."
  • "It was great to see our pitching staff get back to what they have trained to do since September. We had competitive outings throughout the staff and it was the main reason for our series success. Maintaining that edge will be a strong factor in our success moving forward."
  • "Taking a series in Hawai'i should free our guys up a bit to regain confidence as we head back home for a series with Cal Poly next weekend. Our team is playing with energy and intent; they showed they are not willing to give in. I am excited to see them compete next time out."
Notables
  • Cody Hendriks went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, joining Riley Kasper and James Bell as `Runners with two hits on Saturday.
  • Tally Wright Jr. pitched 5.1 innings in relief, but he took an unfortunate loss in a strong outing. Bakersfield's long reliever allowed just two runs while striking out five 'Bows.
  • Riley Kasper led the `Runners all weekend, finishing the series with a .500 batting average (6-for-12) to go with three walks.
  • James Bell hit .357 (5-for-14) at the plate in Honolulu while driving in four of Bakersfield's eight runs on the weekend.
CSUB 2, Hawai'i 3
  • CSUB fell behind early when Hawai'i plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Bakersfield responded quickly to tie the score in the top of the second. Michael Pollard tripled, then scored on an RBI single from Konnor Palmeira.
  • Starting pitcher Jacob Gutierrez got the `Runners out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second to keep the score tied 1-1.
  • Cody Hendriks broke the tie in the top of the sixth with an RBI single that scored Nick Salas.
  • UH answered right back in the bottom of the sixth, tying the score at 2-2 on a two-out RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Hawai'i scored the go-ahead run to take a 3-2 lead. The Warriors would have extended their lead, but Palmeira snared a hard-hit line drive and doubled up UH to keep it a one-run game.
  • Jared Bujanda McConnell's pinch-hit fly ball nearly tied the game in the top of the ninth, but it was snagged on the warning track. The `Runners were unable to rally and ultimately fell to the Warriors, 3-2.
