Game Recap: Baseball |

Bakersfield Looks Forward to Day Two Against Mustangs

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball began with a hot start but could not continue that momentum to win the game. The Cal Poly Mustangs out hit the Roadrunners with twelve runs on eighteen hits compare to the `Runners four off seven.

Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "We got out of the gate well and didn't compete at the level it takes to add on to a lead. We had momentum early but could not sustain it tonight."
  • "We fell behind, and too many counts on the mound, and they have good hitters. They took advantage of leverage counts and pitches to hit."
  • "Their pitching staff did a nice job attacking the zone aggressively with a competitive edge. Our hitters couldn't match it and didn't do much offensively, especially during the middle innings."
  • "We will need to move on from this one and do a better job competing every pitch tomorrow."
Cal Poly 12, CSUB 4
  • The `Runners got off to an early start in the first inning. Scoring three runs to take the lead over the Mustangs. Two of the three runs consisted of Riley Kasper scoring off a wild pitch and Matthew Kurata stealing home.
  • Cal Poly answered right back during the top of the second scoring two runs, one of which was a homer by Freshman, Wyatt King.
  • Continuing the game, James Bell had a single RBI in the third.
  • The Mustangs gained more momentum, getting their first lead of the game off of hitting six runs for the next three innings, bring the score to 8 – 4 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
  • Left-handed pitcher, Marcelo Saldana stops the Mustangs in their tracks during the top of the seventh, leaving the score the same.
  • The `Runners were unable to catch the Mustangs today, with Cal Poly scoring four more runs.  The Roadrunners are back tomorrow night for game two of the series with Matt Comnos getting the start for Bakersfield.
