Comnos and Top of Lineup Earn Third Straight Win

MANOA, Hawaii – In second straight pitcher's duel against Big West stalwarts Hawai'i, Matt Comnos and co. were able to string together the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team's third straight conference win. In dramatic fashion, the Roadrunners left it until the top of the final inning when James Bell singled to right field to put them ahead. Gabe Ulloa closed out the game in expert fashion, giving CSUB a much-deserved 3-2 win over the Rainbow Warriors.

CSUB 3, Hawai'i 2
  • The first two innings were mostly quiet before Hawai'i opened the game's scoring with back-to-back singles that brought in two runs total, in part due to a fielding error.
  • CSUB responded in-kind during the next half-inning. Nick Salas did his job of singling before stealing second base to get in scoring position. Riley Kasper, who has been on a hot streak of his own lately, scored Salas on a single to right center.
  • Matt Comnos went to work after settling down from the Hawai'i second inning surge. Comnos allowed just three more hits through part of the 8th inning before he was relieved by Gabe Ulloa.
  • Comnos has now allowed just five earned runs in his last three starts, all while pitching at least six innings in those appearances.
  • The `Runners teased their comeback effort, stranding Brock Perreira and AJ Miller on base in the 8th before finally breaking through at the top of the 9th. CSUB took advantage of a fielding error to allow the top of the lineup to do its job.
  • Matthew Kurata extended the inning with his hit and the coinciding Hawai'i error before James Bell cleaned up the bases, scoring Riley Kasper and pinch runner Jared Bujanda McConnell. Gabe Ulloa sat down the final three Rainbow Warriors in order to secure the win.
Quotes
  • "Our players performed well and took a big step forward for the team and program. This team has experienced its share of turbulence in close games this season, but it was a well-deserved win against a difficult opponent to beat on the road."
  • "Comnos put together another quality start for our ball club, and we were able to put another one in the win column after his gutsy performance."
