CSUB Puts on Hitting Clinic, Fullerton Takes Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Against one of the Big West's best teams and its best starting pitcher, the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team fought extremely hard the entire evening of game two. Despite hitting amongst some of Cal State Fullerton's best competition this season, the Roadrunners were unable to keep up with the Titans' small-ball offense, falling victim to CSF by a 10-5 score. Jacob Ruley was the hot player of the evening for CSUB, as he continued his recent tear with four straight multi-hit games now, including the three-hit, one RBI night. Cody Hendriks also picked up three hits and two RBI.

Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "Offensively, we did an excellent job all night competing against their top pitchers. We were unable to turn in some runs with close players at third and home plate."
  • "We will need to come out tomorrow and keep the same level of focus offensively. We gave up too many free bases tonight, and it cost us on the scoreboard. It's a new day tomorrow, so expect our guys to continue battling."
  • "We had patches of success both nights and competed well in multiple stretches. I am proud of the way we competed, but we need to take better care of the baseball and get ahead in counts on the mound."
Notables
  • CSUB's bats pushed Fullerton's and some of the Big West's best pitchers to brink, tallying the most hits that the Titans have given up all year, with the `Runners connecting 16 times.
  • Jacob Ruley had yet another wonderful game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. He extended his multi-hit game streak to four. Cody Hendriks great game as well, evening game early with RBI, along with his other RBI forcing CSF's starting pitcher out of the game.
  • This game has CSUB's most hits since UCD. The `Runners juiced the bases multiple times throughout the game but had trouble finishing against Cal State Fullerton's defense.
CSUB 5, CSF 10
  • After allowing a one-run lead to Cal State Fullerton in the first inning, CSUB was in much better position after Cody Hendriks doubled to right-center, sending Konnor Palmeira across home plate for the tying run. CSUB and CSF were knotted 1-1 after the first.
  • Fullerton put on a few more runs, but Matt Comnos was able to get out of the third inning without too much damage done. Cal State Fullerton led 3-1 with the `Runners coming up to bat in the fourth inning.
  • Jacob Ruley was able to smash his first homer of the season well-over the head of the Fullerton left fielder, continuing his breakout April effort and helping cut the Fullerton lead in half.
  • Cody Hendriks, Jared Bujanda McConnell, and Matthew Kurata all tacked on runs after the fifth inning, but multiple offensive surges from Cal State Fullerton saw the Titans lengthen the lead to eventually win 10-5.
