Bakersfield Set for Rematch with Hawai’i

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team is back home for their second to last home series of the 2023 season. CSUB is welcoming Hawai'i for a three-game series. Hawai'i sits in fifth place in the Big West standings, although they hold the third best overall winning percentage this season. The Roadrunners and Rainbow Wāhine have faced off once before this season in the UNLV Desert Classic; Hawai'i beat the `Runners 14-6.

`Runner Notes 
  • The last time the two teams met three `Runners had a multi-hit game. Maya Williams, Shaylene Fuimaono, and Reina Castillo had two hits each. Brianna Lopez pitched for Hawai'i in this game, where the Roadrunners were able to get seven hits off her and plate five runs before her departure.
  • Kaycie Kennedy had her best outing of the season this past weekend versus Cal Poly. Kennedy pitched 5.1 innings and held the Mustangs scoreless through three innings.
  • Williams extended her reached base streak to six games; her season long is seven.
Scouting the Opposition 
  • Hawai'i (26-15, 9-6 BW) is coming off a series win versus UC Riverside. The Rainbow Wāhine has won every series in conference play except when they played CSUN on March 24 and 25.
  • The Hawai'i offense and pitching staff is quite impressive. Izabella Martinez leads the team with a .393 batting average, .696 slugging percentage, 1.158 OPS, hits (44), homeruns (9), RBI (35), and total bases (78). Martinez has only struck out three times this season while walking 16 times. Maya Nakamura is another intriguing bat in the lineup slashing .368/.534/.558. Nakamura has 26 walks and only five strikeouts this year.
  • Hawai'i has a pitching staff ERA of 2.89, with two pitchers that handle much of the workload. Brianna Lopez has made 23 appearances, completed 12 games, and has had five shutouts this year. Key-annah Campbell-Pua has made 16 appearances, completed eight games, and has had three shutouts this year. Opposing batters are hitting .246 against this pitching staff.
