Ruley Gifts the `Runners a Massive Extra-Innings Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team showed resilience and determination in a statement win against Cal Poly, the first victory over the Mustangs since 2021. The Roadrunner pitchers held Cal Poly to just four runs on twelve hits with Tally Wright Jr. coming up big in the 10th inning to strike out former `Runners Aaron Casillas with bases loaded. Jacob Ruley had himself a highlight-reel game with an RBI in CSUB's opening offensive push before sending cheers throughout Hardt Field with a walk-off RBI to secure the 5-4 win.

Quotes
  • "What a great team victory tonight! That game was back-and-forth and could have gone either way. For us to overcome the mistakes and win the ballgame was a great tribute to our student-athletes. They never stopped competing, and that is what we want to take from the win."
  • "We had to re-center again when Cal Poly started pitching a lot better in the middle sets. We knew that we needed to be more patient and not chase anything out of the zone. What a big-time way to come back for the victory."
  • On Jacob Ruley: "Jacob has worked so hard to be where he is right now. He has improved a lot this year and has earned everything he did today. The biggest thing about him: he is a competitor."
CSUB 5, Cal Poly 4
  • James Bell opened up the scoring in a fantastic first inning for the `Runners. Bell batted Riley Kasper in before Jacob Ruley came up clutch to continue the run glut, bringing Kurata across home plate.
  • To round out the first inning offensive explosion, Michael Pollard nearly had an inside-the-park home run but was caught at home plate after batting in two more runs.
  • Cal Poly was finally able to get on the board with a 2-run fourth innings, pushing the `Runners back a bit, but CSUB still led 4-2 midway through the ballgame.
  • Matt Comnos did a good job, as usual, of giving the `Runners solid defense with his work from the mound. Gabe Ulloa relieved Comnos after 6.1 innings with just two runs allowed on seven hits.
  • CSUB's pitching stonewalled Cal Poly's hottest batter, Joe Yorke, holding him to 0-for-6 on the evening, including two strikeouts.
  • Despite letting Cal Poly back into the game, the `Runner pitching corps stood tall to battle the Mustang batters on a number of occasions. The highlight of the night was Tally Wright Jr. striking out former `Runner Aaron Casillas with bases loaded to give CSUB a chance in the bottom of the 10th.
  • Jacob Ruley stood up to the challenge in the 10th inning. With AJ Miller and Konnor Palmeira on second and first, Ruley hit one over the shortstop's head to send Miller around third and across home plate for the walk-off RBI.
