CSUB Grab Early Lead but Can't Hold Off UCD Comeback

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team looked to make a statement with a five-run first inning. Matt Comnos pitched deep into his starting appearance, allowing just six hits through almost seven innings, while Jacob Gutierrez, Connor Culp, and Konnor Palmeira all hit a pair of RBIs. Despite this, the CSUB bullpen could not hold off the Aggies, as UC Davis went on to make the comeback with a grand slam involved, winning 14-7.

CSUB 7, UC Davis 14
  • Riley Kasper hit a stand-up leadoff double to get the `Runners started after going down 1-0 in the first half-inning. Kasper ended up scoring after Matthew Kurata hit one to the UCD first baseman who committed an error.
  • CSUB continued tacking on the runs, putting the UC Davis starter back on the bench after Connor Culp and Konnor Palmeira both singled in RBIs, while Jacob Gutierrez continued his recent dominance with a two-RBI single. CSUB led 5-1 after the first.
  • Matt Comnos settled down after a small UCD burst in the first inning. He allowed just six hits through almost seven innings of work and 112 pitches while tossing six strikeouts on the day. He continues his reign as CSUB's strikeouts leader with 35 on the season.
  • In the third, Konnor Palmeira added another RBI to his already impressive season, putting the `Runners up 6-1 and causing the Aggies to yank another pitcher.
  • Connor Culp continued the left field bombardment in the sixth inning with another RBI; his second of the day and personal best in a single game at CSUB so far. The `Runners went up 7-1.
  • UC Davis was finally able to respond again in the seventh inning with three runs on reliever Davonte Butler. He was able to get out of the inning shortly after, with CSUB retaining a 7-4 lead.
  • After CSUB went through a few more relief pitchers, UC Davis was able to get runners on base and hit a grand slam to take the 8-7 lead. The Aggies extended that lead to 10-7 through eight innings before going up 14-7 in the ninth, holding that lead for a victory.
Quotes
  • "It was one of those games where you have control of the game for six innings, Matthew [Comnos] came out and should have won a baseball game with the way he pitched. Our bullpen let us down and they tried their hardest to close the floodgates, but it didn't work out."
  • On Comnos' third 100+ pitch outing: "Matty's been pitching well all year, and he deserved the win today. At this point in the year, he's ready for that kind of challenge and he measured up in every way."
