CSUB's Solid Offense is Not Enough vs UC Davis

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team fought hard in a tight game that saw the Roadrunners tie for their second-most hits this season. However, a strong stretch from the Aggies during the fifth and sixth innings gave UC Davis the go-ahead lead and 5-4 win, holding the `Runners scoreless through the final six innings. Despite the loss, it was a promising offensive performance, particularly with the 3-for-3 day from Jacob Gutierrez and a no-doubter home run from AJ Miller that sparked the initial CSUB lead.

CSUB 4, UC Davis 5
  • UC Davis opened up scoring with a fielder's choice that sent in a runner from third. Ryan Verdugo sat the Aggies down in order the next innings before Connor Culp hit a sac fly to bring Riley Kasper in and tie the game at 1-1.
  • After settling himself down from the first inning, Ryan Verdugo continued sitting down batters on strikes, fanning four through as many innings.
  • AJ Miller provided some support with his second homer of the year, putting him second all-time for career home runs.
  • Miller's home run sparked an offensive wildfire in the bottom of the fourth, with Jacob Gutierrez and Nick Salas batting in runs to extend CSUB's lead 4-1 by the next inning.
  • UC Davis had a strong sixth innings to retake the lead after slowly clawing back into the game. The Aggies led 5-4, picking up a few runs after Ryan Verdugo was relieved.
  • The `Runners were unable to make up the difference after UC Davis re-took the lead, and the Aggies were able to close the game out despite a 3-for-3 day from Jacob Gutierrez.
Quotes
  • "We had a really good approach to start the game, and I thought we did a nice job getting their starter out of the game. He is their best pitcher, and that was our objective. The problem with that was we got a 4-1 lead, couldn't extend it, and that proved to be the difference today."
  • "AJ Miller's last few games have been good. He was struggling there for a while, but he has really found his rhythm and it hitting a lot better."
