Bell Hits Second Homer of the Year; Bakersfield Drops Finale

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team battled hard against the Santa Barbara Gauchos in the series finale. Bakersfield struck early for a 3 – 0 lead, and Santa Barbara answered back with one of their own. The Roadrunners were unable to cash in on several scoring opportunities which opened the door for UCSB to keep things close and eventually walk it off in the bottom of the ninth.
CSUB 4, UCSB 5
  • James Bell hit a three-run home run, his second this year, in the top of the first inning to left field to put the `Runners up early, 3 – 0.
  • The Gauchos answered back in the bottom of the frame, plating one run on two hits.
  • A pair of solo home runs by Santa Barbara knotted the game up at 3 heading into the fourth inning.
  • Matthew Kurata singled in the top of the fifth, Kyler Stancato scored on the play putting Bakersfield back in front 4 – 3.
  • A SAC fly in the bottom of the sixth inning by the Gauchos made it a 4 – 4 ball game.
  • The game entered the ninth inning still tied at 4. Stancato led off the inning and was hit by the pitch, then stole second to get in scoring position.
  • Bakersfield had two runners on base in the ninth but was unable to bring in a run.
  • UCSB loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs, a single drove in the winning run for the Gauchos.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "We had every opportunity to win a ballgame today. We pitched well, and for the most part, played a strong defensive game."
  • "We left 11 runners on base compared to their 5. We had plenty of chances but could not find the timely hits."
  • "Our ballclub is progressing as a team, we need all three phases to show up more consistently."
  • "We have another opportunity tomorrow, we need to work at hitting fastballs in the zone with runners in scoring position."
