`Runner Bats Pop Off in Offensive Explosion

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – From the get-go, the Cal State Bakersfield Baseball team had an offensive battle on its hands against University of Pacific. The Roadrunners found production throughout the lineup, securing victory 12-6 thanks to a pair of three RBI games from A.J. Miller and Jacob Gutierrez, while Nick Salas walked three times and James Bell had just as many hits.

CSUB 12, Pacific 6
  • CSUB responded to Pacific's early lead with A.J. Miller's 14th career home run for the `Runners, putting Bakersfield up 2-1 through two innings.
  • The `Runners and Tigers traded runs again in the third inning, with Kyler Stancato sending one out of the park in the same direction as Miller.
  • After reliever Ryan Figueroa got the `Runners out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage, CSUB played small ball to get Konnor Palmeira home on a Jacob Gutierrez sac bunt.
  • Kyler Stancato crossed the plate for the second time on an Angel Saldivar stand-up double to the left field line, giving CSUB the 5-3 lead after five.
  • Bakersfield native Jacob Gutierrez singled to center field in the sixth, putting CSUB ahead 8-3. Bases became loaded again in the sixth, but Pacific got out of the jam.
  • A.J. Miller hit a sac fly to deep center, sending another run in and bringing the Bakersfield lead to 10-5. Bakersfield would close out the game 12-6 with steady play.
  • It was a game of three's, as Nick Salas walk three times, both Miller and Gutierrez his triple RBI's, and James Bell had a three-hit outing.
Quotes
  • "We had a lot of great team at-bats, scoring a run per inning at least after the first inning, and that had a lot to do with our execution and our ability to move runners over; whether that be a safety squeeze, bunt, or hit-and-run."
  • On Jacob Gutierrez: "Guty brings a sense of eagerness to the baseball field, he wants to play every day and we were considering redshirting him, but based on need it was an important decision to bring him in. We're looking to continue developing him."
