CSUB Post Big 3rd Quarter But Can't Complete Comeback

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – With CSUN on a nine-game losing streak, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team was searching for a win to break away from the pack at the bottom of the Big West standings. The Roadrunners were beaten 69-60 by a CSUN team that found a way out of its losing skid. Despite the result, CSUB fought hard and never gave up, putting up three double-digit scorers, including Hennie van Schaik who reset her career high with 18 points on 6-of-17 from the field.

Notables
  • Hennie van Schaik had a quiet first half, as did most of the team, but then exploded in the second half to finish with a new career high 18 points.
  • CSUN's Tess Amundsen kicked off the Matador attack early in the game, which is a big reason why they gained such a large lead through the first half. She ended the game with nearly a third of CSUN's points and hit all five attempted perimeter shots.
  • Van Schaik, Garrisen Freeman, and Taylor Caldwell all found a way to get on the scoreboard with double digits but shooting accuracy issues were prevalent yet again with 37% shooting from the field and just 26% from the perimeter.
  • Foul trouble proved to help CSUN gain the first half lead, with CSUB tallying 12 combined fouls, putting the Matadors into the bonus for both of the first two quarters.
  • A massive 17-9 third quarter gave CSUB a solid chance at staging a comeback. The `Runners shot 42.9% from the field while holding CSUN to 20% on just ten shots.
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • Bakersfield was tested early by the Matadors, with CSUN jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead just under two minutes into the game, which forced CSUB to take a timeout to reset.
  • CSUB answered quickly, 7-5, but the first quarter turned into a period of back-and-fourth runs. The `Runners came within just one or two possessions multiple times, but the Matadors seemingly always found a way to separate.
  • The first quarter ended on a buzzer beater three by Nseije Ortiz to bring CSUB within three points of the CSUN lead. Matadors remained up 20-17 by the beginning of the second.
  • The `Runners took their first lead of the game, 21-20, in the second period, but CSUN quickly responded again by retaking the lead just thirty seconds later.
  • Through the remainder of the second quarter, CSUN found its groove and went on a 8-0 unanswered run to end the half with a 45-29 lead. Tess Amundson shot and scored all of CSUN's five three-pointers.
Second Half
  • CSUB opened the third quarter pressuring CSUN a bit more than how the first half ended. The `Runners kept scoring, but the Matadors would respond at every opportunity.
  • Bit-by-bit CSUB clawed its way back into the game, and on the back of a 17-9 third quarter, pulled within just eight points of the CSUN lead.
  • With Hennie van Schaik leading the way with 10 points through three quarters, the `Runners pulled out a 9-0 unanswered run through the final four minutes of the third period.
  • CSUB pulled within single digits multiple times throughout the fourth quarter, but again, CSUN found a way to answer most, if not all, of the points that the `Runners put up.
  • The `Runners were able to stay in the game, in part, thanks to CSUN's 15 combined second half fouls, including a 9-foul fourth quarter.
  • Despite a hard-fought second half comeback efforts, CSUB could not quite keep the Matadors off the scoreboard, losing to CSUN 69-60.
