`Runners Push LBSU to Brink but Fall Short of Win

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team traveled to Long Beach understanding the challenge ahead, with the Beach on a nine-game win streak and sitting at first in the Big West. The Roadrunners grabbed an 11-point lead by the break before Long Beach State flipped that to a win of the same amount as the Beach took the 66-55 victory.

Notables
  • Despite a quick Long Beach State drive, the `Runners stood up to the challenge a took a defining lead just a few minutes into the game. They would go on to hold that lead for over 26 minutes, including being ahead 11 points at halftime.
  • From the onset, CSUB dominated off the glass. However, LBSU responded just enough with its own board game to claw away at the CSUB lead. The `Runners also found themselves in foul trouble, which helped the Beach to the charity line to take and extend their lead.
  • Sophia Tougas had a monster game, with a career high 18 points, while Taylor Caldwell also put up a career high, and CSUB D1 top-10, 9 assists for the `Runners. CSUB's Hennie van Schaik also scored 17 points, continuing her reign as the team average points leader.
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • Despite a quick lead from the Beach, CSUB went on a small run around the first media timeout to keep LBSU close. The `Runners took its first lead of the game, 13-10, with three minutes to play in the first quarter.
  • Bakersfield was able to take control of the board game early, doubling LBSU by the end of the first quarter, 12-6 off the glass in CSUB's favor.
  • The `Runners took advantage of a slow and sluggish Long Beach, putting up seven points off turnovers while making nearly 47% of their shots from the field compared to 33% for the Beach. CSUB led 19-14 by the second quarter.
  • Playing a true team game, Taylor Caldwell finished the half with 7 assists, adding to a team total of 9 assists on 12 total shots.
  • Sophia Tougas scored 4-of-6 from the field for 13 points, while Soli Herrera and Simone Johnson helped with the dominance off the glass, nabbing 5 boards each.
  • In spite of the odds, CSUB had quite possibly its best half of the season, taking an eleven-point 36-25 lead by halftime.
Second Half
  • Just two players for Long Beach State exploded in response to the CSUB lead coming out of the break. With a 20-9 run, the Beach found a way to knot the game at 45 each by the media timeout.
  • Bakersfield answered by turning on the offense to retake the lead by the end of the third period. As the `Runners led 51-47, Sophia Tougas had already set a new career high with 18 points.
  • After over 26 minutes with the lead, the `Runners were overtaken by a 7-0 Long Beach State run, putting the score at 52-51 Beach lead with about seven minutes remaining in the game.
  • Foul trouble persisted throughout the fourth quarter for CSUB, as Taylor Caldwell would foul out with under three minutes to play in the game, down five points to the Beach.
  • A four-point fourth quarter hampered the offensive firepower that CSUB had displayed for most of the game. Long Beach State never looked back and was able to hold its late lead to win.
