Collum, Henson Explode to Lead CSUB to Overtime Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Career-high scoring nights from Cal State Bakersfield forwards Antavion Collum and Travis Henson catalyzed an overtime on Thursday night in the Icardo Center. Taking on UC Riverside, which came into the contest second in The Big West standings, CSUB (7-15, 3-8 BW) held off the Highlanders (15-8, 8-3 BW) in the 82-76 shootout.

Notables
  • Collum has now posted career-high scoring efforts in each of his last three games. The native of Memphis, Tenn. went off for 31 points on Thursday (9-12 FG, 13-15 FT) while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Collum also played 43 minutes and 32 seconds of the possible 45 minutes.
  • Normally relying on a deep bench, CSUB played just seven men while five `Runners were unavailable on Thursday. Collum carried much of the load, becoming the first `Runner to score 30+ points since the 2018-19 season (Jarkel Joiner, 34 points vs. California Baptist, Jan. 24, 2019).
  • Henson exploded for 24 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks, all three of which were new personal bests for the senior.
  • CSUB converted on 57.8% of its field goal attempts on the night, a season-high against Division I opponents.
  • Bakersfield also knocked down 28-of-33 free throws (.848) as the `Runners continue to trend toward ranking as the best free throw shooting team in the Rod Barnes Era (since 2011-12).
  • The `Runners outrebounded the Highlanders 32-26, but UCR stayed in the game thanks to a 12-of-26 three-point shooting effort.
Quotes
  • On what has the team trending toward playing better basketball: "Coach Barnes. Every day, coming with the same energy and attitude, telling us he believes in us and we can do it, we just have to keep sticking to it, and that really showed tonight." – Ivan Reynolds
  • "We just kept playing together, moving the ball, and trusting each other to make plays. I think that carried us a long way through the game." – Travis Henson
  • "To get a win against a team like that, that's ranked high in our league like that, it just shows us that what we do can work. It shows us to keep trusting the process. If we trust the process, something good gonna come out of it." – Antavion Collum
  • "This is a great group of kids and it was great to see them get rewarded for their hard work…They just showed a lot of resilience and that's what I like to see more than anything. I'm very proud of the team and their effort and execution. I thought that was the best 45 minutes we have played and that really excites me and I'm excited for them." – Head Coach Rod Barnes
