`Runners Head to Arizona to Take on GCU, #16 Arizona

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team enters this week 1-6, after playing in New Mexico at the UTEP/NMSU Invitational over the weekend. The Roadrunners will continue their road trip competitions. Bakersfield travels to Arizona for three midweek games, two against old WAC foe in Grand Canyon University and #16 Arizona.

`Runner Notes 
  • Senior center fielder, Savanna Montoya, earned All-Tournament honors at the UTEP Invitational. Montoya went 3-for-6, including a triple and home run. Montoya leads the team in home runs (2).
  • Senior right fielder, Maya Williams, was batting .261 coming into this weekend's games. After going 4-for-9 over the weekend, she was able to bump up her average to .303 which leads the team. Williams also leads the team in on-base percentage (.452).
  • Brianna Sanchez made two appearances over the weekend, versus Tarleton State and UTEP. Sanchez threw a complete game versus Tarleton State striking out five and giving up only one run. Her outing versus UTEP was cut short after giving up four runs in two innings. Sanchez still has an ERA of 3.55, opponents are batting only .228 so far this season.
Scouting the Opposition 
  • Grand Canyon (14-1) is off to its best-ever start. Of the Lopes' fourteen wins, seven of them have been shutouts.
  • GCU enters this week on a five-game winning streak with a run differential of +82 on the season.
  • The Lopes can beat opponents with either their offense or pitching. As a team, they have a combined batting average of .343 and an on-base percentage of .454. As a pitching staff, the team averages an ERA of 1.41 with 82 strikeouts and opponents' batting .213 against them.
  • Arizona (10-5) comes into this week ranked #16 in the nation. They have played notable teams such as #6 Florida State, #7 Arkansas, and #8 Virginia Tech; beating Arkansas and Virginia Tech.
  • Last season the Wildcats finished the season 39 – 22 and reached the College World Series before losing to Texas and then #7 Oklahoma State.
  • The Cats are undefeated at home batting .338 with 15 home runs with 103 RBI. Their pitching staff averages a 2.05 ERA in 88.2 innings pitched with four complete games, led by Junior, Devyn Netz.
