CSUB Doesn't Complete Series Sweep in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. – In the final road game of the 2022-23 regular season, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team came up against Cal State Fullerton, one of its three conference wins earlier in the year. The Roadrunners, looking to improve in the standings with not much time to go before the Big West Championship, were unable to steal victory from the Titans in Fullerton. Despite repeated efforts to close the gap and retake the lead, the `Runners were pushed back each time and eventually dropped the 57-44 result to Cal State Fullerton.

Notables
  • Hennie van Schaik had an electric start to the game, scoring 10 quick points through the first 15 minutes of the game, but things slowed down for her after that. She would finish the game with 13 points and 7 rebounds as one of Bakersfield's few offensive bright spots on the day.
  • Grace Hunter and Soli Herrera were key in keeping the `Runners alive through the second half. Hunter stepped up to convert 5-of-8 field goals for 11 points while Herrera contributed 8 boards to the cause in 23 minutes on the court.
  • Although CSUB was never truly out of the game, each time the `Runners got close Fullerton would pull back ahead and make the gap that much harder to breach. However, Bakersfield never gave in, battling the entire way.
  • While Fullerton posted three double-digit scorers, the offense for Bakersfield was relatively limited to just two players that scored over half of the team's points.

First Half
  • CSUB found its way into the key early, taking a 6-2 lead through the first media timeout mostly on shots near or under the rim while dominating off the glass.
  • From the onset, Hennie was deadly on the floor, hitting 3-of-3 for 9 points. She was a big reason why the `Runners were able to hold the 13-11 lead into the second period.
  • Fullerton posted an 11-6 second quarter, holding CSUB to just 3-of-13 from the field in the quarter and 0-of-7 on the perimeter through the half.
  • Despite this, CSUB was still close at the break as Fullerton led 22-19. On paper, the `Runners were ahead for the most part, but most of the offense flowed solely through van Schaik.
Second Half
  • CSUB came out of halftime scoring quickly before Cal State Fullerton found a way to recover and respond near the third quarter media timeout. The Titans were quickly up seven again.
  • The `Runners had a small run of points near the end of the third quarter, primarily led by the efforts of Sophia Tougas and Soli Herrera, to close the gap before CSF pulled back ahead.
  • Bakersfield proved very hard to beat, as yet again, the `Runners found a way back into the game through the media timeout. Hennie van Schaik improved to 13 points and 5 rebounds.
  • Despite CSUB pulling within just six points midway through the final quarter, Fullerton stepped on the gas again and pulled ahead to secure a 57-44 victory in the final few minutes.
