`Runners Come Close to Upset, Beaten by Late Surge

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With two games to go in the regular season, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team had tournament positioning to play for. Against Long Beach State, the Roadrunners were unable to overcome another fourth quarter surge despite playing the Beach close for most of the game, eventually losing 46-52.

Notables
  • Hennie van Schaik put up a masterful performance on both sides of the court, logging her second double-double this season with 15 points and a career high 12 rebounds.
  • With another close performance for the second time this season against LBSU, the `Runners proved they can keep up with any team in the Big West, even the projected No. 1 seed.
  • With Senior Day on the horizon for Taylor Caldwell, she managed a wonderful effort against the Beach alongside van Schaik to keep the `Runners close to LBSU, finishing with 10 points.

First Half
  • From the start, Long Beach State had a good handle on CSUB's passing cycles, turning the `Runners over multiple times enroute to taking an early 14-6 lead after the first period.
  • Hennie van Schaik was taking everything off the glass defensively, with 5 rebounds after missed LBSU shots through the first quarter.
  • Taylor Caldwell hit a pair of three pointers in the second quarter to cut the deficit, but Long Beach State continued to respond.
  • The `Runners had a small surge towards the end of the second, holding LBSU scoreless while finally getting their shots to land. The Beach retained the 28-21 lead into the break.
Second Half
  • CSUB opened up the half playing tight defense against Long Beach State's offense, but the Beach broke away again after some missed shots from CSUB.
  • Towards the end of the third quarter, the `Runners went on a solid run to pull within just six points of the LBSU lead, as Hennie van Schaik got her double-double during that run.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, LBSU found a way to slip by the CSUB defense and lengthen the gap to a sizable lead, 52-41. Like the `Runners, the Beach had two double-digit scorers.
  • Similar to the last time these teams played, the `Runners kept Long Beach State close into the fourth quarter but let the Beach break away to an eventual victory.
