Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Written by James Tsitakis-Cecil

Morris and van Schaik Career Highs Not Enough vs CSUN

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With just four games left in the season, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team hosted CSUN at the Icardo Center in front of over 3,000 K-12 students on Education Day. The `Runners opened up with a steady first half lead, 28-20, but CSUN made a big second-half comeback to send the game into overtime where the Matadors secured victory 73-66.

Notables
  • Kayla "Boogz" Morris managed to reset her career high points (22) and blocks (5) on a dominant day for her. She spent 41 minutes on the court after making her first career start.
  • Hennie van Schaik would combine with Morris for 41 of the team's 66 total points, picking up 19 of her own and resetting her career high as well, all in 34 minutes of play.
  • Between the two teams, it was a messy game with plenty of stoppages and fouls called. There were five players total who fouled out and five more all in danger of it.
  • 54 total points were scored between both teams off free throws alone in 77 attempted. In the fourth quarter, CSUB shot just 2-for-9 from the field but scored 15 points from the stripe.
Quotes from Head Coach Greg McCall
  • "We fouled too much, especially going down the stretch. That's been our Achilles heel, just trying not to foul and give up easy buckets."
  • "I thought we competed, for the most part, but I also thought we had some lows. We had put ourselves in position to win, but the fouls costed us again. They had a big bank-shot three down the stretch, and that hurt us."
  • "It's one of those things where I am so passionate about winning, our players, CSUB, because it's been a home here for me. We are fighting tooth and nail, but still coming up short. I just want our fans to know that our ladies are giving it everything they got."
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • The game began slowly, with CSUN leading 5-4 through the first media timeout. Both teams were off their shooting game, and it kept the score open for the taking.
  • Through the remainder of the first quarter, CSUB quickly found itself in foul trouble, sending CSUN to the line enough times to extend its lead 14-9.
  • Hennie van Schaik and Kayla Morris really opened up the scoring through the first part of the second quarter, combining for 13 points by the media timeout to pull within two of CSUN.
  • The `Runners dominated on a 17-4 run through the final eight minutes of the half, going into the break with the momentum and a solid 28-20 lead.
Second Half
  • CSUB continued its run in the driver's seat, extending to 26-6 midway through the third quarter. However, after holding Bakersfield scoreless for a few minutes, CSUN came within just five points of the `Runner lead.
  • The `Runners continued to hold the Matadors off, scoring on-pace with them through most of the fourth quarter via free throws. At the final media timeout, CSUB led 50-43.
  • CSUN continued to claw away at the `Runner lead, eventually coming within three points in the final thirty seconds. The Matadors then hit the game-tying three with just seconds to go.
Overtime
  • As the game went to overtime at 62-62, CSUB continued fighting hard to protect home court. However, the Matadors limited the `Runner offense and had ten free throw attempts to lengthen its early overtime lead.
  • CSUN would go on to win 73-66 after taking the overtime period 11-4, with CSUB committing six personal fouls in the quarter.
