Caldwell Posts Career Numbers During Loss to Hawai'i

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With five days between games, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team traveled across the Pacific to play Hawai'i with all intentions of breaking the four-game losing slide. The `Runners fought Hawai'i the entire game, even taking the lead at points, but ultimately fell to a decisive Rainbow Wahine fourth quarter. Hawai'i would go on to take the 65-52 result.

Notables
  • Early on, the Hawai'i bigs were in foul trouble, allowing CSUB to rebound well off the glass, but as the Rainbow Wahine settled down through the game, they took over to boards.
  • The `Runners managed to keep up with UH for most of the game, especially after shooting 57% in the first quarter. However, the Rainbow Wahine used a 21-9 fourth quarter to win.
  • Kayla Morris, seemingly recovered from her injury, played 23 minutes while putting her two-way game on display again. She was just shy of a double-double with 9 points and 9 boards.
  • Taylor Caldwell enjoyed a big night, giving CSUB the offensive spark that it needed to compete with Hawai'i. She posted a CSUB career-high of 17 points through 36 minutes of play.

First Half
  • Hawai'i came out in the first quarter hitting two quick shots from the perimeter, but CSUB managed to keep the Rainbow Wahine close by converting from the charity stripe.
  • Hawai'i went into the second period with a 18-16 lead, CSUB shot 57.1% from the field and absolutely dominated off the glass, 7-2 boards, to limit the damage.
  • After spending most of the first half within one or two possessions of Hawai'i, CSUB committed 16 fouls in the half, giving the Rainbow Wahine a chance to get a decent lead from the line.
  • Over a third of the first half's combined points between the two teams were scored via free throws. The CSUB offense was converting those well, but the field goals dropped to 38.1%.
Second Half
  • Hawai'i went through most of the third quarter on the same pace as the first half, keeping CSUB at an arm's length. However, a long run from the `Runners lessened the deficit.
  • The `Runners took the lead again for a few moments with a minute left in the third period, 43-42, but more foul trouble allowed Hawai'i to retake the lead. UH shot 0-11 from the field.
  • The Rainbow Wahine stepped on the gas and controlled CSUB's offense during the fourth quarter, leading to a 21-9 effort that sealed the win for Hawai'i.
