'Runners Split Results with St. Thomas in Doubleheader

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Following Friday night's opening day shutout win, the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team continued its four-game series against St. Thomas with a double-header. The Roadrunners used a massive 6th inning in the first game to wallop the Tommies 8-1. In the second game, the `Runners went down early before clawing back to just a one-run deficit. However, a 9th-inning burst extended the Tommies' lead until their eventual victory.

CSUB 8, St. Thomas 1 (1:05 p.m.)
  • The first inning featured both sides being sat in order, with no hits until the fourth and a high pitch count for both starters.
  • St. Thomas found the bat in the 6th inning, and an error in left field to give the Tommies a triple instead of what could have just been a single. A sac-fly put UST up 1-0 after six, and Gabe Ulloa took the mound.
  • CSUB collected its first hit of the game from Kyler Stancato, who smacked a stand up double to deep left field near the foul line. Riley Kasper hit a single the opposite way, sending Stancato to third, who scored on wild pitch, tying the game 1-1.
  • The `Runners hit their stride as AJ Miller hit a run in, then crossed the plate on an Angel Saldivar double. With Runners up 3-1, Brock Perreira hit a triple off the right field wall to clear the bases and make it 6-1
  • Ulloa managed himself out of tough position in the 7th after CSUB pulled off a quick 6-4-3 double play. The next inning, he tallied his first two strikeouts of the year.
  • The final run of the game was scored on a sac fly by Perreira who collected his 4th RBI for the game. Bakersfield would take its second win of the series and season.
CSUB 4, St. Thomas 8 (4:30 p.m.)
  • St. Thomas opened the game strong in the first inning against Tally Wright Jr. in his first CSUB start. The Tommies' first batter singled and the second reached on error before both runners advanced on groundouts, crossing the plate for the game's first two runs.
  • In the bottom of the first, Riley Kasper doubled to right field, and for the second time today AJ Miller batted him in to cut away at St, Thomas' lead.
  • In the bottom of two, Jared Bujanda McConnell set himself up well, getting on-base before stealing second. The `Runners managed to tie the game 2-2 after a throwing error.
  • Brigs Richartz, the St. Thomas left fielder, advanced to 2-for-2 on the day after hitting a line drive to center field. Richartz scored to put St. Thomas up 3-2 after a Vujovich single.
  • Bujanda McConnell found himself on base again after being walked in the bottom of the 4th. He advanced around the bases on a double from Connor Culp, crossing the plate on a Stancato ground out. CSUB trailed 5-3 to St. Thomas after the inning.
  • Devonte Butler took the mound in relief for the first time this season during the 7th inning. With this game, he officially moved into 10th place all-time for CSUB career appearances, passing Naithen Dewsnap.
  • After Butler pitched two scoreless innings, Kyler Stancato moved onto the mound from center field. Stancato allowed St. Thomas to go up 8-4 in the top of the 9th.
  • The `Runners would not be able to recover despite putting runners on the corners in the ninth with two of their best batters up to the plate in AJ Miller and James Bell.
Quotes
  • "It was a good start by [Jeter] Scheurman. Sometimes he has trouble getting behind the fastball but once he settled down, I thought he did a good job and we played pretty good defense behind him."
  • "We were really proud of Brock [Perreira]. He's come a long way after having shoulder surgery in the offseason, so he had to give up his defensive position."
  • "Tally [Wright Jr.] gave us a really good game in that second one. I thought he deserved a better outcome, but we kicked the ball around a little bit and didn't help him out a lot..."
