Bats Spark for 10 Runs as CSUB Clinches First Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team closed out Opening Weekend with a 10-4 victory, capping a 3-1 series win over the Summit League's St. Thomas. On Sunday, the Roadrunner offense struck early and often while Matt Comnos' seven innings of work on the mound set Bakersfield up to win.

CSUB 10, St. Thomas 4
  • CSUB plated four runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead on the Tommies. Walker Moore and Nick Salas both tallied RBI singles in the frame, sandwiched by a pair of CSUB runs scored thanks to two different balks.
  • St. Thomas answered back with a single run in the fourth, but the `Runners plated two more of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Catcher Angel Saldivar's two-RBI single put CSUB ahead 6-1.
  • Comnos closed out his line after the seventh inning with his team ahead 7-1. The native of Mission Viejo, Calif. threw four strikeouts and allowed just three hits and a walk in a quality start.
  • The Tommies used four hits in the eighth inning to plate three runs, making the score 7-4 before Brock Barron came out of the bullpen and got the `Runners out of a no-outs jam.
  • CSUB responded right back in the bottom half of the eighth, scoring three runs of its own thanks to RBI base hits from both Matt Masciangelo and Jacob Ruley.
  • With the `Runners leading 10-4, Barron came back out for his second inning of work and closed out his first save as a `Runner. A Bakersfield native, Barron transferred to CSUB this year after three seasons at Bakersfield College.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "It was nice to see some offense today. That was an emotional ball game right there. We had some things go on early that neither team liked and I really liked the fact that our guys wanted to compete every pitch. They stayed in the moment, didn't get overly emotional, and really got after a pitcher that has had a lot of success in his career."
  • "Matt Comnos has been working really hard in the offseason. We can use him in a plethora of roles. We're pretty excited about the fact that he's a lefty that can come in and mix pitches."
  • On several newcomers making immediate impacts: "Getting their feet wet was huge. It's tough to put them right in at the front, but that's exactly what we did. Coach Hawksworth and myself did a lot of work in the offseason to try and get some guys in here…They have pretty good talent but not a lot of experience so we need to get them on the field, get them confident and ready to go."
