`Runners Head to Las Vegas for Week 2

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Taking the lessons they learned from Opening Weekend and a week of practice between, the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners are heading back out for another early-season tournament. The Bakersfield softball team is in Las Vegas, Nev. for the UNLV Desert Classic this weekend and the `Runners are ready to play five games over three days against stiff competition.

`Runner Notes
  • Bakersfield (0-5) opened the 2023 season with five games over three days at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, including a pair of losses against No. 2 UCLA.
  • The `Runners' best game of the weekend ended up being a 3-2 loss in extra innings against Utah State. During that game, CSUB's Brianna Sanchez battled in a pitchers' duel, throwing a complete game and keeping the `Runners in the fight.
  • Senior outfielder Maya Williams wrapped up Opening Weekend hitting .222 (2-for-9) but posting a .417 on-base percentage thanks to a walk and two hit-by-pitches.
  • Two-way player Reina Castillo also had a pair of hits in CSUB's first weekend of action. Castillo made two starts in the circle and struck out four batters in 7.2 innings of work.
Scouting the Opposition
  • Tournament host UNLV (2-4) posted a 43-15 record last season on the way to a Runner-Up finish at the National Invitational Softball Championship.
  • Hawai'i (3-3) finished third in the Big West standings last year, posting a 17-10 league record while going 23-19 overall. The Rainbow Wahine split six total games on Opening Weekend at their first of four home tournaments this season.
  • Montana (0-5) closed out the 2022 season with a 20-27 record. The Grizzlies dropped a pair of games against Fresno State on Opening Weekend as well as one against UC Riverside.
