CSUB Fall to Late Cal Poly 4th Quarter Surge at Home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team got a reprieve from its hectic late-season schedule with just one game this week on Wednesday as the Roadrunners hosted Cal Poly. CSUB was unable to contain the Cal Poly attack despite playing the Mustangs close for most of the game. A decisive 17-12 fourth quarter sealed the victory for Cal Poly, 51-42 over the `Runners despite yet another double-digit game for Hennie van Schaik.

Notables
  • With the healthiest lineup in weeks available for the `Runners, Kayla Morris returned to the court in a limited fashion for the first time since Jan. 21, tallying three blocks in just over 12 minutes of play.
  • Hennie van Schaik may have led the team with 10 points on the night, but Nseije Ortiz put forth more evidence as to why she is nicknamed "Scrap." Ortiz was a force from the paint, picking up four rebounds along with nine points, mostly off driving layups.
  • Perimeter shooting issues persisted yet again for the `Runners, as they converted just 2-of-16 from beyond the three-point line. Grace Hunter and van Schaik shot the two makes to help keep the `Runners close in the game before Cal Poly surged ahead with a big final period.
Quotes from Head Coach Greg McCall
  • "Props to Cal Poly, they beat us in every category tonight. We didn't do a good job keeping the ball out of the paint or scoring easy shots. Our post players didn't do their jobs. We had some moments where we looked okay, but we should've made many of the shots that we didn't."
  • "The frustration on the court got congested, with the missed shots and some disagreements on the calls. But that's part of the game, we still have to make our shots and play our game."
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • CSUB nabbed the first points of the game, but Cal Poly responded in kind and pulled ahead quickly, taking the 12-6 through the game's first media timeout. Both teams are shooting under 40% at this time.
  • The `Runners found themselves in foul trouble after the media timeout, putting Cal Poly into the bonus with over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Mustangs converted 3-of-5 from the free-throw line through the period.
  • Continuing how they left off in the first quarter, the `Runners extended a small run into the second period to knot the game at 18-all just a few minutes in.
  • Nseije Ortiz was deadly in the key, living up to her "Scrap" nickname," as she set the team's tone early with six points and three rebounds by the second media timeout.
  • Bakersfield found a way to tie the game again, taking just its second lead of the game 21-20 with over three minutes to play in the half.
  • CSUB was unable to get the perimeter shooting to fall, converting 0-of-8, but shot over 38% from the field to trail Cal Poly by just three heading into the break.
Second Half
  • Cal Poly came out of halftime scoring quickly, but both teams quickly settled down soon after, with just five combined points scored by the media timeout.
  • The game turned defensive and stayed that way for a while in the third quarter. Both teams were shooting well under 25% from the field as of the media timeout.
  • Grace Hunter finally hit CSUB's first three of the game with over two minutes left in the third quarter, putting the `Runners closer to the Cal Poly lead. However, the Mustangs would end the period up 34-30.
  • With a small run and some CSUB foul trouble, Cal Poly was able to take a 41-35 lead coming out of the final media timeout with under five minutes to play.
  • The Mustangs surged ahead with their largest lead of the game, 46-35, before CSUB took a timeout to regroup with 3:37 on the clock.
  • Cal Poly extended its large lead late in the quarter 47-37 to force CSUB to start fouling for opportunities. However, the `Runners would not be able to get back into the game, dropping the result to the Mustangs.
