`Runners Earn Road Victory at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Led by a quartet of offensive weapons, the Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball team earned a 70-62 road win against Cal Poly on Wednesday night. The visiting Roadrunners posted a big second half on the way to the Big West victory as CSUB has now won four of its last five contests.

Notables
  • Trailing by one point at halftime, the `Runners outscored the Mustangs by nine in the second period, 44-35.
  • CSUB is now 10-0 in the Rod Barnes era (since 2011-12) against Cal Poly.
  • Four `Runners each scored in double digits in Mott Gym, but Antavion Collum led all scorers with 23 points while adding six rebounds and four assists.
  • Marvin McGhee III tallied 16 points to go with five rebounds and two steals on Wednesday.
  • Bakersfield made just 4-of-17 (.235) three-pointers but made up for it with a 20-for-22 (.909) performance from the free throw line in the victory.
  • CSUB committed just seven turnovers while forcing 15 Cal Poly turnovers.

First Half
  • Cal Poly never led CSUB by more than four points in the first period, taking a slim, 27-26 advantage to the locker room.
  • Both teams struggled to get their offenses rolling in the first ten minutes. The shooting picked up down the stretch, but Cal Poly shot 41% from the field while Bakersfield converted on 37% of its field goal attempts.
  • Collum led all scorers with 12 points in the opening half.
  • The Mustangs outrebounded the `Runners 19-13.
Second Half
  • Bakersfield printed ahead of its host early in the second half, taking a 38-31 lead less than four minutes in.
  • Cal Poly never let the `Runners get away, but CSUB pulled ahead, 63-54, with 2:29 left on the clock.
  • After Collum carried the offensive load in the first period, three other `Runners joined him in scoring 9+ points each in the second half: McGhee, Cameron Smith, and Travis Henson.
  • CSUB shot 50% in the final 20 minutes, 10% higher than its hosts.
