Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CSUB Rally Falls Short on Homecoming Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball team came up short in its quest for a fourth-straight victory in Saturday night's Big West game against Long Beach State. The Roadrunners started out slow, but made a big, second-half push, pulling within three points down the stretch. The visiting Beach squad hit its free throws to put away the game, downing the `Runners on Homecoming Night, 79-69.

Notables
  • Bakersfield enjoyed a well-balanced offense with five different `Runners scoring in double digits against the Beach.
  • Cameron Smith led all `Runners with 16 points while Marvin McGhee III sparked the second-half push on his way to 15 points.
  • Antavion Collum and Travis Henson each tallied 11+ points while both chipped in seven rebounds.
  • Point guard Ivan Reynolds recorded a season-high 11 points to go along with four assists and two steals.
  • After a slow offensive start, Bakersfield wrapped up the evening with a 47.5% shooting clip, close behind LBSU's 50% effort.
  • The Beach outrounded the `Runners 36-27 on the evening and LBSU outscored CSUB 25-4 on fastbreak points.
Quotes
  • "It was a tough loss, obviously. We've got a lot to learn from. I think transition killed us tonight, but I think when we played five on five, we pretty much held them pretty good and that's how we ended up on the short hand of the stick." – Smith on Saturday night's loss
  • "That was the game that Kaleb [Higgins] got hurt. Ivan [Reynolds] really stepped up on the defensive end and running the One for us. Ivan is leading us in the right direction, so we're just going wherever Ivan go, wherever he lead us." – McGhee on Bakersfield's upcoming rematch with Cal Poly
  • "Homecoming is always an exciting time to have everyone back. I think our administration has done a great job of really supporting the students as far as coming back. I thought we had a good week of reflection and spending time seeing former players and also students coming back. I thought we had a good crowd tonight." – Head Coach Rod Barnes
  • "I didn't like our approach. I was disappointed in the way we started the game…I'd just like to come out in these situations, after we've had a winning streak, and kind of will our way to a victory. Early on, I thought we were not playing as hard or as focused as we needed to be. Because of that, we dug a hole against a good basketball team." – Barnes, Bakersfield's 12th-year Head Coach
