• The Cal State Bakersfield's men's soccer team remains tied for second in The Big West standings after splitting a pair of matches this week.
• Bakersfield hosted its annual Education Day match on Wednesday, resetting the program’s all-time record for attendance with 2,514 fans watching the `Runners win against UC Irvine.
• The `Runners hosted Cal State Fullerton on Saturday with the top spot in The Big West on the line. CSUB nearly completed the comeback against the Titans, but fell just short.
• CSUB came into this past weekend ranking first in The Big West and 6th in NCAA Division I in defense (0.545 Goals Against Average).
  • CSUB has posted five shutouts in its first 12 matches and only one team has scored more than one goal against the `Runners this year.
• Bryson Hankins, a Bakersfield native and a team captain, is one of the team's top contributors.
  • The defender plays a huge factor in CSUB's defensive prowess, but he also is first on the team in assists (3) and second in points (7). 
• CSUB hits the road for a pair of Big West games this week.

  CSUB 2, UC Irvine 0 – Wednesday, Oct. 4

• A record-breaking crowd cheered Bakersfield to a shutout victory against the Anteaters.
• Following a scoreless half, the `Runner faithful were energized by a 55th-minute goal from freshman Adrian Jogerst.
• CSUB continued to control the match and put a dagger through the hearts of its visitors when Connor Mautino scored a penalty kick goal in the 86th minute.
  • The PK goal was Mautino’s third in as many matches.
• CSUB goalkeeper Brandon Limes and the `Runner defense closed out their fifth shutout of the season with Limes making four saves against the Anteaters.
• Bakersfield extended its unbeaten streak to nine-straight matches with the victory.

CSUB 1, Cal State Fullerton 2 – Saturday, Oct. 7

• Saturday’s battle for first place featured Bakersfield, the No. 6 defense in the country, against Fullerton, the No. 14 offense in NCAA Division I.
• The visiting Titans showed their offensive firepower early on, taking a two-goal lead into halftime after dominating the pace of play.
• CSUB flipped the script in the second half, controlling the majority of possessions and opportunities.
• Just over six minutes into the second period, Shia Clayton connected with Jesse Wangusi to make the score 2-1.
• The `Runners created several more chances at the equalizing goal, but Fullerton was able to hold off the charge of Bakersfield for the 2-1 victory.
• The loss snapped a streak of nine-straight matches unbeaten for the `Runners. Meanwhile, the Titans now have an eight-match winning streak insides of an 11-match unbeaten streak.

• As the Big West continues beating itself up with common opponents trading wins and losses, no team has yet to break away from the pack. CSUB now sits at 7th place in-conference.
  • With just four games of conference play remaining, the Cal State Bakersfield Women’s Soccer team is still well-within reach of a playoff appearance.
• With a conference record of 1-2-3, the `Runners are on a similar pace to last year’s performance. CSUB needs just one win to tie last year’s mark. Bakersfield is also three home wins away from hitting 100 all-time at the Main Soccer Field.
• With the draw against UC Riverside, CSUB is still unbeaten against the Highlanders since joining the Big West.
• Dome Rodriguez and Hildur Jonasdottir had a big weekend, scoring in the same game as Rodriguez not only bagged a goal on her birthday but also became CSUB’s goals co-leader.
• Bakersfield now heads back on the road to battle Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara, both schools that are coming off favorable results.

CSUB 0, Hawai’i 2 – Thursday, Oct. 5

• The Rainbow Wahine started hot, putting themselves up 1-0 with an Izzy Ayala header in via leading assist-getter Cate Sheahan’s first corner just four minutes through the first half.
• Hawai’i looked thoroughly the better side through twenty minutes before Hailey Russell subbed in for CSUB and rocketed two long shots off the crossbar, giving Bakersfield life.
• Controversial decisions in the 58th-minute caused an uproar from the Bakersfield sideline, causing the side judge to hand out two separate yellow cards to CSUB assistants for dissent.
• Though the `Runners swung momentum in their favor for the second half, the fire was not quite the same after the yellow cards.
  • Hawai’i did not take long to grasp the advantage as Brynn Mitchell received a long through ball from Cate Sheahan to get behind the CSUB line and go up 2-0.
• Despite a game that looked closer to a draw on-paper, with Hawai’i narrowly leading the shots 14-11, UH made its chances count and left Bakersfield with the 2-0 victory.

CSUB 2, UC Riverside 2 – Saturday, Oct. 8

• The first 45 minutes of the game belonged to the `Runners as they led the shots 3-2 and held the majority of possession despite the game remaining nil-nil through the break.
• Bakersfield finally broke through in the 53rd minute when Selena Hernandez laid off a pass for Dome Rodriguez to streak into the UCR box and slot one past the keeper’s near-side.
• Less than a minute later, Riverside struck back when Aaliyah Tu’ua caught the `Runners resting on their laurels to tie the game up.
• Amidst all of the chaos, Hildur Jonasdottir took advantage of a defensive miscue deep in the UCR box to sneakily tap in the go-ahead goal just five minutes after Riverside’s response.
  • After this, the Highlanders went into overdrive, taking over the momentum as CSUB was trying to see out the game.
• UC Riverside’s Sarah Assumma deployed some late-game heroics by firing a laser beam of a shot to Hollee Hercik’s top right corner, tying up the game in the 88th-minute.
  • The equalizer held through the final two minutes as Bakersfield left the game with a bitter but well-fought 2-2 draw.

• Cal State Bakersfield's women’s volleyball team went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the league, Long Beach State, taking the Beach to a fifth set but fell short in the tiebreaker, 15-9. 
• CSUB's primary setter, Nene Hawkins, had 73 assists for the weekend while averaging 8.11 assists-per-set as well as having four kills offensively. 
• Our ladies are back on the road for another weekend of Big West play, heading to Irvine on Friday and wrapping up the weekend against Fullerton on Saturday. 

  CSUB 2, Long Beach State 3 – Friday, Oct. 6

• CSUB played the now 10-5 Long beach State very tight and took them into deep waters, going five sets.
• CSUB took the first set 25-23. Bakersfield came out hot, taking a 10-5 lead, but Long beach State was able to work back and eventually tie 18-18. 
  • The Roadrunners fell behind 21-19 before pulling back ahead, taking the set to kick off a thrilling Pride Night.
• Much like the first set, the second was also a tight, back-and-forth affair. Bakersfield put the Beach against the ropes with opportunities to thrive, but LBSU would get the better of them in the second set, managing to pull out a 25-22 victory.
• CSUB fell behind in set three, dropping a 25-15 loss in which LBSU built off its momentum from the second set by jumping out to a 12-4 lead.
• The Roadrunners bounced back making the Beach play from behind as CSUB took a lead 8-7 and didn’t look back, going to a tiebreaker after a 25-23 set win.
• Long Beach State and CSUB exchanged points up to a 10-8 lead for the Beach before running away with the game after a challenge against Bakersfield went in their favor.
  • Naomi Chankoumi and Breklyn Pulling led the match, both with 4 blocks, and Ava Palm had another double-double of 16 kills and 17 digs.
• Nene Hawkins had 46 assists on the night, just 4 behind the match leader, Long Beach State’s Zayna Meyer

CSUB 1, UC San Diego 3 – Saturday, Oct. 7

• UCSD took set one, 25-18, as Ava Palm led with 6 kills and Nene Hawkins had 9 assists.
• CSUB fell behind early with an 8-3 deficit in the second set but cut it back to 4 at 14-10. Despite this, the `Runners were unable to make a comeback, losing the set 25-18.
  • Bakersfield played from behind the majority of the set, tying it up 8 times.  
• CSUB had 10 attack errors on 29 attempts with a team attacking percentage of -.069. Paige Dugan’s kill sparked the roadrunners to take their second lead of the third set.
• When the `Runners took the lead, they didn’t lose it, having 18 kills on set and firing up the attack with a .548 attack percentage as a team. 
  • Bakersfield would go on to win set three, 25-18.
• In set four, CSUB took early 5-2 lead but the Tritons quickly turned the momentum, going back up 13-11. 
• UCSD ended up winning the fourth and final set, making the final score 3-1 UCSD.
