Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Written by James Tsitakis-Cecil

CSUB's Strong Defense is Not Enough to Hold Off Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – To kick off its first game of the new year, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team traveled west to the central coast for a Big West matchup against Cal Poly. All things considered, the game looked to be a relatively even contest, on paper, with both teams having records and non-conferences results thus far. However, Cal Poly's defense proved too much for CSUB, and the Mustangs took the game 50-37, Bakersfield's lowest point total on the season.

Notables
  • Despite Bakersfield's best efforts, Cal Poly's defense was able to force CSUB's offense to just 30% shooting from the field and 15% on three-pointers, leading to the `Runners putting up a season-low 37 points on the day.
  • In line with the team's defensive philosophy, solid CSUB shooting pressure kept Cal Poly from gaining too many high-quality opportunities. In the end, despite the large score differential, the `Runners were able to keep Cal Poly's three-point percentage below their no. 54 ranked mark in Division I.
  • Hennie van Schaik continuing to impress after returning from injury a few weeks ago, lengthening her stay as the team's scoring leader. She also accounted for about a third of CSUB's offense in the game, notching her third straight double-digit game with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • Bakersfield started off on the right foot, going up 5-0 in just the first few minutes of the game while keeping Cal Poly off the board for almost four minutes. However, the Mustangs quickly adjusted and fought back to go on an 8-0 near the end of the first quarter, while returning the favor of leaving CSUB scoreless for a few minutes. Cal Poly led 14-7 going into the second quarter.
  • Cal Poly's lead was assisted with the Mustangs taking advantage of the vast majority of 50/50 balls, nabbing 24 boards in the first half alone, while converting those into 7 second-chance points.
  • As a bright side to an otherwise quiet quarter for the `Runners, Soli Herrera had an uncharacteristically solid offensive start to the game, leading CSUB with 6 points by the end of the half, only two points shy of her career high.
Second Half
  • The half started soft on the offense again, with just six total points scored by the media timeout over six minutes into game.
  • Both teams played relatively clean basketball through the first half, but Cal Poly got itself into foul trouble with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, putting CSUB into the bonus. Despite not converting as many points during the bonus as they would have liked, the `Runners were able to get within a few points of the Mustangs' lead going into the final period.
  • Bakersfield's conference-leading shooting defense was on display yet again despite Cal Poly's continued lead, with the `Runners holding the Mustangs to just 33% from the field and 27% from the perimeter.
  • After the `Runners were able to briefly tie the game at 32-32, Cal Poly went on another large run in the final few minutes of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead, close out the game on CSUB, and defend its home court.
