Career Night From Morris Despite UCD Sharpshooting

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With a 1-2 record in the Big West after dropping a defensive slugfest to Cal Poly last time out, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team went back home to host perennial Big West headliners, UC Davis. Despite an amazing night from Bakersfield's defensive dynamo, Kayla Morris, the Roadrunners fell to an accurate UC Davis sharpshooting effort that saw over half the Aggies' points converted via three-point tries.

Notables
  • In spite of the loss, Kayla Morris dominated for the `Runners, accounting for over half of CSUB's total points. She set new career highs with 22 points, 5 blocks, 7-of-9 free throws, and a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the three-point line. She also made the effort into a double-double with 10 rebounds.
  • With UC Davis finding itself in foul trouble, CSUB was able to keep the game close at points on the back of 10 converted free throws.
  • The Aggies cycled the ball well and exposed gaps in Bakersfield's otherwise solid defense, getting quite a few uncontested perimeter shots, netting 11-of-35 on the day. Those three-point shots would end up accounting for 33 of Davis' 60 total points.
  • Although the `Runners had the lead and momentum after the first half, UC Davis broke out in the third quarter with a 10-point unanswered run to gain a lead that never went away.
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • The game started off slow on both ends of the court, with misfired shots all around. The first point of the game came from a UC Davis free throw a whole three minutes into the contest. However, once the two opponents found their footing, the shots started landing.
  • Sophia Tougas got the `Runners started off with her staple three-pointer before Kayla Morris threw down a highlight reel-worthy block and drained her own three to put CSUB up 10-9 by the end of the first quarter.
  • Back-and-forth shootout play ensued during the second quarter, with each team going on large runs, but CSUB was able to gain the upper hand by the break, up 28-25.
  • "Boogz" Morris had already reset her career high points by the end of the half, with 14 points including 3-of-3 from downtown. Although just four `Runners were on the scoreboard at halftime, Bakersfield regained the lead and momentum heading into the second stint.
  • CSUB's defense, as is becoming the standard, was dominant, holding UC Davis to 25% shooting from both the field and perimeter. Even so, both teams put each other into the bonus after trying to play their opponent tough and dampen the shooting.
Second Half
  • The Aggies, down five points at the start of the third quarter, found their feet quickly and tied up the game 28-28 just over a minute in before regaining their lead for the first time since midway through the previous half.
  • CSU Bakersfield was held without a point for the first 6 minutes of the third quarter before finally landing a shot. With that, Kayla Morris officially set a new career high for points. The `Runners were able to get just three points midway through the half.
  • Heading into the final quarter, UC Davis did not slow down its offense, and CSUB was shooting a low 9% from the field, leading to the Aggies having a 51-35 at the final media timeout with just over five minutes remaining.
  • CSUB could never quite get a handle on the game again, as UC Davis slipped by to close out the game 60-43 on the back of a 37-15 second half effort.
