Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Written by James Tsitakis-Cecil

Ortiz has Career Night but UC Davis Takes the Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With a close loss to UC Santa Barbara at home last time out, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team went back on the road for the season's second matchup against UC Davis. In the first game a few weeks ago, the Aggies handed the Roadrunners their largest conference loss, so Greg McCall and his team will certainly be looking for payback as CSUB continues to try and gain a foothold in the Big West. Despite having just eight available players for the contest, the `Runners put up a valiant fight with the help of a career night from Nseije Ortiz but eventually fell to UC Davis 79-57 in the end.

Notables
  • With three of the team's top-five scorers out for the game, in Taylor Caldwell, Sophia Tougas, and Kayla Morris, Hennie van Schaik returned to the court from injury for the first time since early January. She finished the night with 11 points and 6 rebounds in spite of the loss.
  • Nseije Ortiz, the true freshman walk-on from Porterville, hit her first three-pointer and didn't stop there. She would go on to have an absolutely explosive career night compared to her previous high of just four points earlier this season. Ortiz finished the game with a team-leading 13 points and 6 rebounds on top of three assists. She shot extremely well, converting 5-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the perimeter.
  • Despite a solid offensive effort from Bakersfield, and one of the better shooting efforts on the season, a big second half from the `Runners was not enough to close the gap, in part due to such a large UC Davis first half lead.
  • CSUB did a wonderful job making up for last game, holding Evanne Turner to single-digits, but unfortunately UC Davis had three other double-digit performers that stepped up and helped the Aggies secure victory.
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • Although CSUB, and the game as a whole, started off very slowly the `Runners played with a spark that allowed them to keep UC Davis from running away with the game. Through the first few minutes of play, CSUB held Davis to under 30% from the field.
  • However, the Aggies started hitting their perimeter shots consistently, and used 6-of-12 three-pointers to lead 20-7 by the end of the period. Twelve of the seventeen UC Davis shots came from beyond the three-point line.
  • As the Aggies continued their high-powered offensive effort in the early quarters, Bakersfield began to slow a bit and struggled to hold back a sharpshooting Davis team that did not look back after gaining the lead.
  • In terms of individual performances, the `Runners were doing a spectacular job of limiting Evanne Turner, Davis' top scorer from the first time these foes met. However, the Aggies had other weapons that they utilized and finished the half up 43-22 over CSUB.
  • On the bright side, Bakersfield's true freshman walk-on Nseije Ortiz broke out in a big way to the tune of 8 points and 2-of-2 perimeter shots converted, both season highs for her in just the first half alone.
Second Half
  • CSUB's offense opened up a bit at the start of the half, scoring nearly on-pace with Davis, but the Aggies were still able to keep the `Runners at an arm's length. Bakersfield converted 7-of-11 for 63.6% from the field, while also scoring 12 points via perimeter shots.
  • The fourth quarter was nearly halfway over by the time UC Davis scored their first points of the period. Bakersfield began to close the gap scoring seven of its own points to none from the Aggies through the first five minutes of the quarter.
  • The Aggies won the half narrowly 36-35, and although Bakersfield was able to improve the offense greatly with two double-digit performers in Ortiz and van Schaik, Davis held off the `Runners to win the game.
