CSUB Falls to Hawai'i Despite Hennie Double-Double

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the last game of January, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team came back into town to host last year's Big West regular season and tournament champion, Hawai'i. With the healthiest team the Roadrunners have put on the court in weeks, CSUB gave Hawai'i a run for its money on a career night for Hennie van Schaik. However, the Rainbow Wahine used a big second half effort to secure a 51-47 victory against Bakersfield on the road.

Notables
  • Hennie van Schaik came out in the first quarter draining every shot she took, helping CSUB to a quick lead 16-3 by first media timeout with three perimeter makes. She would go on to reset her career high of 17 points before the first half was even over. By the end of the game, van Schaik earned her second career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
  • For two opponents that would most likely not consider each other rivals, by any stretch, the game was scrappy and testy at moments, with both benches arguing foul calls and contested shots. CSUB finished with three players in foul trouble, one personal away from fouling out, and there were 35 fouls and 40 turnovers combined between both teams.
  • With the Rainbow Wahine's top scorer out, their second-best shooter Lily Wahinekapu was the next person up as a threat to CSUB's defense. Through the first half, CSUB held her to seven points, not completely negating her influence but at least slowing her. She got away from the `Runners in the second half, however, with Wahinekapu scoring 14 points with 3 assists and 4 steals to boot.
  • CSUB was not quite able to employ a balanced offense, which led to some restrictions in how Bakersfield fought back against UH's resurgence. Through three quarters, there were five `Runners that had not found a way onto the scoreboard. However, in place of that, the defense was even stronger than usual at the perimeter.
Quotes from Head Coach Greg McCall
  •  "Hats off to Hawai'i, whether we win or lose, I always want to give the opponent credit. I think we did a good job containing them when we needed to, but we missed some opportunities down the stretch. It's one of those things where it's on the side of the basketball gods, with the bad bounces, rebounds straight to the other team, the ball hitting off Taylor Caldwell's foot."
  • "Sometimes you just can't blame the players when things don't go our way. We had a lot of great moments, just fell short. We can't turn the ball over as many times as we did, but we still did great things."
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • CSUB rocketed out to one of its finest starts of the entire season thus far, leading 16-3 at the first media timeout, with Hennie van Schaik landing 3-of-3 perimeter shots to pump up the `Runner crowd and light a fire under the team.
  • Hawai'i quickly recovered and capitalized on a few Bakersfield fouls and turnovers to slightly narrow the gap. However, CSUB held fast and keep the score widened heading into the second quarter, leading 21-14 on the back of van Schaik's 13 first-quarter points and 4 rebounds.
  • The second quarter got off to a slow start, with just six combined points between the two teams at the media timeout. The `Runners still led 26-15, with Nseije Ortiz hitting a three and the entire team playing tough, shutdown defense, holding Hawai'i to just 25% shooting in the second period.
  • Although Hawai'i inched closer near the end of the half, CSUB played the Rainbow Wahine hard, having three separate players with two steals each. Simone Johnson had three assists, while Soli Herrera held things down defensively with two steals and two blocks.
Second Half
  • Hawai'i came out of the half strong and fast, bringing the CSUB lead to just four points early in the third quarter. As the lead dwindled, the `Runners were scoreless for nearly four minutes as the Rainbow Wahine went on a 9-2 run over eight minutes.
  • Near the end of the third quarter, Hawai'i had managed to finally close the gap and take the lead for the first time since the very first points of the game. The Rainbow Wahine led 41-39 heading into the final period, with Hennie van Schaik one board away from a double-double.
  • Hawai'i continued to hold the lead midway through the fourth quarter, but CSUB came back to put the deficit between one-to-four points through the final five minutes. Every time Bakersfield came close, Hawai'i would push back and widen the gap again.
  • In the final minute of the game, Hawai'i missed four-of-eight from the charity stripe thanks to a loud and rowdy CSUB crown at the Icardo Center, giving Bakersfield a shot to get back into the game. However, it would prove to not be enough, as Hawai'i finished the game 51-47 to secure the road victory.
