Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Slow Start Dooms CSUB in Thursday Night Loss

Bakersfield - Utah Tech scored in the 17th minute and held on for a 1-0 win over host California State University, Bakersfield, Thursday evening at The Main Soccer Field. The Roadrunners threatened on several occasions over the final 45 minutes of play, but could not find the equalizer, falling to 2-3-0, while the Trailblazers won for the first time this season, improving to 1-3-0.

"We gave a good account of ourselves in the second half, in terms of trying to get back into the game," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Tonight was less about our performance and more about attitude. It took us until halftime to realize what it was going to take to win this game. We'll be disappointed, but hopefully the lesson will help us in the Big West."

First Half...
* Larsen Rogers scored the game's first goal for Utah Tech, when he cut across the top of the 18-yard box, beat a defender and drilled a finish into the lower right corner to give his team the lead.
* Bakersfield nearly equalized in the final minutes of the first half, when Bilal Mihoubi placed a perfect cross on the head of Stephon Marcano. Marcano's header fell just wide of the Utah Tech goal.
* CSUB goalkeeper Filippo Dadone made two saves in the first half, while Bakersfield did not put a shot on net in the frame.

Second Half...
* In the 65th minute Bryson Hankins raced up the right side, faked a cross at the end line and dribbled into a shot on goal. Trailblazer goalkeeper Jacob Zimmerman cut down the angle and gobbled up the effort.
*  Hankins had another strong rush in the 81st minute when he trailed Carlos Armendariz and Rene Cortez up the field before blasting a shot that was just tipped over the bar by Zimmerman.
* CSUB attempted six shots in the second half, to Utah Tech's one, and out shot the Trailblazers for the game 9-5.

Notable...
Filippo Dadone made two saves, giving him 19 stops through five games, the second highest total in the Big West Conference to date.
* Captain and central midfielder Carlos Armendariz has attempted 14 shots this season, the highest total of any Big West field player through five games.
* Seven Roadrunners played the full 90 minutes against Utah Tech.
* Bakersfield earned five corner kicks on the night, while surrendering just one to the Trailblazers.
