'Runners Race Past Cal Poly in Big West Play

Bakersfield – Freshman Kalea Eichenberger scored a pair of goals, and classmate Catalina Roggerone netted the game-winner, as California State University, Bakersfield raced past visiting Cal Poly for a 3-1 win in a Big West Conference match-up at The Main Soccer Field, Thursday night. The Roadrunners improved to 4-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference action, while the Mustangs fell to 4-6-1 and 1-1-1, respectively. The two teams had entered the contest tied for third place in the league standings.

"(Tonight) was not our best performance and I don't think 3-1 represents how competitive this game was through 90 minutes," said CSUB Head Coach Sebastian Vecchio. "But we defended with passion and character and that led to our offensive chances. We're in a good place now and we just have to continue to go."

First Half...
* Freshman Kalea Eichenberger gave Bakersfield a 1-0 lead in the third minute, when she volleyed home a cross from midfielder Regielly Halldorsdottir to put the Roadrunners in front.
* Goalkeeper Hollee Hercik was forced to make a pair of first half saves for CSUB, as Cal Poly earned a 5-4 advantage in shots attempted and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks during the first 45 minutes of play.

Second Half...
* Cal Poly drew even on a corner kick in the 69th minute when Annie Larsen bent her attempt around the Roadrunner defense. Bakersfield's Karen Flores leapt to prevent the goal but didn't get enough on her header to clear the ball off the line.
* Defender Penny Smith pounced on a loose ball near midfield and placed a pinpoint service into the top of the box for Midfielder Catalina Roggerone. Roggerone ran onto the ball and flipped a one-touch shot over the outstretched arms of Mustang goalkeeper Mackenzie Samuel to put CSUB back in front in the 82nd minute.
* Kalea Eichenberger scored her second goal of the game just two minutes later to ice the contest for Bakersfield. Regielly Halldorsdottir and Kalee Covert assisted on the play.

Notable...
* Kalea Eichenberger's goals were her third and fourth of the season to lead CSUB. Regielly Halldorsdottir assisted on each of Eichenberger's tallies, placing the two Roadrunners into a tie for first on the team with nine points.
* Hollee Hercik made five saves on six Cal Poly shots on goal, making at least five stops for the ninth time in 12 games started this season.
* The Roadrunners improved to 3-2-2 in their past seven games, after starting the season 1-4-0.
* Bakersfield beat Cal Poly for just the second time in series history (2-9-0), and for the first time since 2009.
* Tonight's 3-1 victory catapulted the 'Runners into a tie for first-place in The Big West with Long Beach State. Both teams have seven points, with The Beach playing one less game to date.
