Flores Goal Pulls CSUB Even in Draw with Gauchos

Bakersfield – Sophomore midfielder Karen Flores headed in the equalizer late in the second half as California State University, Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara played to a 1-1 draw, Sunday evening at The Main Soccer Field in Bakersfield, Calif. The Gauchos appeared to score the game-winning goal with less than five minutes to play, but the goal scorer was ruled to have entered via an illegal substitution nullifying the play and preserving the tie. The Roadrunners finished the weekend with four critical Big West points, giving the team eight for the season with a 2-1-2 conference record.

"I have mixed emotions about our comeback, because I felt like we wasted the first half tonight," said CSUB Head Coach Sebastian Vecchio. "That was disappointing, but we made some key changes and I thought we dominated the second half. Ultimately, we were able to find the equalizer."

First Half…
* UC Santa Barbara's Krysten Vazquez scored the game's first goal on a long shot from the top-right of the 18-yard box. Vazquez' sent her shot high and inside the far post after taking a short pass from defender Shaye Douglas.
* The Gauchos outshot Bakersfield 5-3 in the first half, while the 'Runners held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
* Only three total fouls were called in the first period.

Second Half…
* Dome Rodriquez hustled to win a loose ball from UCSB goalkeeper Evann Smith, before dropping a pass to Anela Nigito just outside the 18-yard box. Nigito then sent a perfect cross across the goal mouth, finding the head of Karen Flores, who finished from six yards away to tie the score at one goal each in the 74th minute.
* Gaucho Elise Ziem appeared to put her team ahead in the 86th minute, moments after racing on the field as a substitute. Ziem was ruled to have entered illegally, wiping out the scoring play and earning herself a late yellow card.
* Each team recorded five shots in the second half, with UCSB putting two on goal to CSUB's one.

Notable…
* Bakersfield's eight league points give them sole possession of first-place in the Big West Conference, pending tonight's late result from Honolulu between Long Beach State and Hawai'i.
* The Roadrunners drew with UC Santa Barbara for the second-time in series history. The Gauchos now lead the all-time series 9-0-2.
* Karen Flores' goal was her third of the season, tied for second most on the team with Regielly Halldorsdottir, and trailing only Kalea Eichenberger's four.
* Anela Nigito drew the primary assist on Flores' equalizer. The helper was the first assist of her collegiate career.
