'Runners Edged on Education Day in Bakersfield

Bakersfield – Visiting Sacramento State scored in the 11th minute and held on to edge host California State University, Bakersfield in front of an Education Day crowd of 1,739 at The Main Soccer Field, Wednesday afternoon. The Roadrunners rebounded from a slow start, but could never find the equalizer dropping their Big West Conference opener to fall to 2-6-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference action.

"We just didn't have the same energy tonight that we had against GCU or Gonzaga," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "That's what we'll have to address as we continue with our Big West schedule. When we start well, we tend to play well."

First Half…
* The Hornets grabbed an early lead when Alejandro Padilla's long service was one touched along by Francisco Magana to midfielder Cody Sundquist. Sundquist carried the ball right and towards the goal line before beating Bakersfield goalkeeper Filippo Dadone to the nearside in the 11th minute.
* Roadrunners Conor Walsh and Stephon Marcano each created strong chances late in the frame off of long services into the box, but CSUB settled for a one goal deficit at the break.
* Sacramento State had a 9-6 advantage in shot attempts, but otherwise the first half was played fairly even as each team earned three saves, four corner kicks and seven fouls.

Second Half…
* Filippo Dadone made two more saves in the second half, finishing the game with five stops on six Sacramento State shots on goal.
* Bakersfield's Stephon Marcano and Sacramento State's Stacy Holmes each earned second-half cautions.
* The Hornets outshot CSUB 11-4 in the frame.

Notable…
* Bakersfield lost at home on Education Day for the first time in program history, falling to 2-1-0 in such events. CSUB had previously shutout #7 Air Force and UNLV in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
* The crowd of 1,739 was the largest to attend a CSUB soccer game since the win over #7 Air Force on Oct. 5, 2018 (2,298). It was the third time this season the 'Runners have played in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 fans and the second time in Bakersfield.
* Filippo Dadone lifted his season-long save percentage to .731. After entering the day fourth in the league in the statistic, Dadone stopped five of the six shots on goal he faced.
* Team captain Carlos Armendariz started his 44th consecutive game as a 'Runner dating back to the 2019 season.

Up Next…
CSUB continues Big West Conference action on the road, with a trip to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night. The Roadrunners knocked off the Titans, 1-0, in 2021 on a Carlos Armendariz first-half penalty kick goal in front of a sell-out crowd on Viva Los 'Runner's night. CSUF entered the weekend as the league's top-scoring team, averaging a robust 2.50 goals per game through their first ten contests.
