CSUB Drops Defensive Battle at Fullerton

Fullerton – Cal State Fullerton scored late in the second half and held on to beat California State University, Bakersfield, 1-0, in a defensive slugfest, Saturday night at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. The Roadrunners, who nearly grabbed the game's first goal just minutes earlier, held The Big West Conference's top offensive team in check most of the night allowing just 10 shot attempts and four shots on goal. The Titans had entered the contest averaging 2.50 goals per game and 17 shots an outing. Bakersfield fell to 0-2-0 in conference play, while the Titans improved to 1-1-0.

"This was a competitive match and we gave a massive effort," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "We saw some great performances and our defensive shape was disciplined. Fullerton are a well-coached team and they're playing very well."

First Half…
* Neither team found the back of the net in a quiet first half, with Bakersfield carrying a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal into the break.
* The Roadrunners best chance came late in the frame, when Rene Cortez appeared to spring Bilal Mihoubi behind the Titan defense, but CSUF's backline recovered before Mihoubi could put a shot on target.
* Each team registered a pair of corner kick attempts in the first half of play.

Second Half…
* Bakersfield nearly broke through in the 67th minute on a free kick attempt just outside the Fullerton 18-yard box. Andres Perez De Gracia faked a chance, leaving the ball for Carlos Armendariz who hooked a ball around the Titan wall and off the right post.
* Jessy Sotelo put the hosts on the board in the 72nd minute when his squibbed shot snuck through several players and just inside the far post on the left-side. Erick Serrano assisted on the play.
* Goalkeeper Filippo Dadone made three second-half saves, as the Titans took eight shots in the period and put four on target.

Notable…
* Bakersfield committed just seven fouls, tying for their lowest total single-game total this season. CSUB also committed seven infractions at Cal Baptist. The Roadrunners were not cautioned once for just the second time this year.
* The Roadrunners fell to Cal State Fullerton for just the second time in series history. Bakersfield entered the game with a 5-1-1 advantage in head-to-head meetings, including a 4-0-1 record in the last five.
