Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bakersfield Bests CSUN in Big West Opening Win

Bakersfield – The California State University, Bakersfield women's soccer team used a three-goal second half to rally and defeat CSUN, 3-1, Thursday evening at The Main Soccer Field in the Big West Opener for both teams. Roadrunner freshmen Jette Zimmer, Anela Nigito and Kalea Eichenberger all scored in the final 45 minutes, with Nigito's first-career strike holding up as the game winner.

"Obviously, conference games are massive and starting with three points is huge," said Head Coach Sebastian Vecchio. "I thought we were lacking a bit in the first half, playing a bit on our heels and a little timid, but in the second half we certainly responded with a better effort."

1st Half…
* CSUN's Cindy Arteaga opened the scoring when she lifted a shot over Bakersfield goalkeeper Hollee Hercik in the 11th minute. Arteaga was assisted on the play by Cassidy Imperial-Pham and Angelica Claiborne.
* The Matadors were the aggressor in the first half, outshooting the Roadrunners by a 6-3 margin. Hercik made one save in the frame for CSUB.
* Bakersfield created five corner kick opportunities in the first half, while holding CSUN without a corner kick chance of their own.

2nd Half…
* The Roadrunners drew a penalty kick opportunity in the 55th minute on a Matador handball. Jette Zimmer calmly tied the game with a perfectly executed shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
* Zimmer would pick up the lone assist on Anela Nigito's game-winning goal in the 72nd minute, putting the 'Runners in the lead for good.
* Freshman Kalea Eichenberger iced the win with her second goal of the season in the 83rd minute.
* Bakersfield attempted an astounding 18 shots in the second half, scoring three times and forcing CSUN goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin to make four stops.
* Hollee Hercik stopped all four Matador shots on goal in the second half, finishing with six saves for the game.

Notable…
* The Roadrunners 21 shots was the team's highest total attempted since a Sept. 28, 2018, win over Chicago State on the road. CSUB beat the Cougars 5-2.
* Anela Nigito's game winning goal was her first as a Roadrunner. Freshmen Jette Zimmer and Kalea Eichenberger each scored for the second time in the last three games.
* Goalkeeper Hollee Hercik has made 20 saves in three games, earning a pair of wins.
* CSUB finished the night with 14 corner kick attempts to the Matador's one. Bakersfield had entered the game with just 21 corners through the first seven games. The last time the 'Runners had 14 or more corners in a game was Oct. 26, 2019.

Up Next…
Bakersfield wraps up non-conference play against Sacramento State, Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.) at The Main Soccer Field. Following Sunday's game, CSUB will turn its full attention to Big West competition, beginning with a trip south to face Long Beach State and UC Irvine next week.
