Bakersfield Downed in Non-Conference Tilt with Boise State

Bakersfield – The California State University, Bakersfield women's soccer team carried play for long stretches, but visiting Boise State struck quickly and efficiently on the counterattack all afternoon and earned a 5-1 non-conference decision, Sunday afternoon at the Main Soccer Field. Roadrunner midfielder Regielly Halldorsdottir scored CSUB's lone goal on a long free kick early in the second half.

Bakersfield falls to 2-5-0 and will now regroup ahead of Thursday's Big West Conference opener, while the Broncos improved to 3-2-0 overall.

"The final score was disappointing, but I don't think it reflects how we played as a team," said CSUB defender Penny Smith. "We came out playing hard and playing well in the first half, but faced some adversity when their first shot went in the goal and things spiraled a little. We need to limit our mistakes and learn from today in order to be our best in the Big West."

First Half...
* Boise State earned the game's first goal on a counterattack against the run of play. Carly Cross pushed the play up the left wing and fired a long drive that was pushed aside by a diving Hollee Hercik, before Sophie Drown pounced on the rebound to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
* Hayden Wilsey ran onto a Bronco through ball and beat Hercik one-on-one to give Boise a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute. Evva Vaile assisted.
* Wilsey struck for her second of the game just four minutes later when Jayla Land and Abby Bivens earned possession on a BSU corner kick and found their teammate alone at the top of the six-yard box.
* The Roadrunners drew four corner kicks in the first half, while the Broncos earned one. Boise held a 5-2 shot advantage in the frame.

Second Half...
* Regielly Halldorsdottir pulled Bakersfield within two when she stepped into a free kick and scored from 22 yards out. Kalea Eichenberger drew the free kick when her shot was knocked down with a Boise State hand ball.
* Carly Cross finished off a tic-tac-toe play at the goal mouth the extend BSU's lead back to three goals. Ashly Berge and Morgan Stone collected assists on the play.
* Kenzie MacMillan made it 5-1 when she finished off a penalty kick opportunity in the 80th minute.
* Hollee Hercik made four second half saves as BSU outshot CSUB 9-6 in the period.

Notable...
* Regielly Halldorsdottir's goal was her third of the season, a Bakersfield team high. Two of her goals have come off of set pieces this season.
* Bakersfield goalkeeper Hollee Hercik made five saves on the afternoon and finished her week with 14 saves over 180 minutes played.
